History[]

Megadramon protects maki and daigo

Megadramon protects Nishijima and Himekawa from the Dark Masters.

Nishijima was one of the original Chosen Children and was partnered with Bearmon. During their final battle against the Dark Masters, when they seemed to be losing, Nishijima lost consciousness but was awakened by Himekawa Maki urging him to not give up. In his weak state, he witnessed Homeostasis possessing Himekawa, using her Digivice to make their digimon partners evolve. When light surrounded all of the Digimon except for Himekawa's partner, Megadramon, Nishijima caught Himekawa as Homeostasis left her body. When the Dark Masters attaced them, Himekawa's partner saved them. Nishijima was then swept up with his partner and watched as their Digimon became the Harmonious Ones, while Megadramon sacrificed himself to channel an immense energy attack against the Dark Masters.

Daigo and maki

Nishijima asks Himekawa to be his partner.

Years later, Nishijima and Himekawa attended the same college. Himekawa told Nishijima about her plan to reboot the Digital World in order to bring Bakumon back. Worried about her obsession, Nishijima tried to dissuade her from it and asked to instead be her "new partner". Although Himekawa laughed at his awkward manner, she agreed to date him. At some point, however, Nishijima and Himekawa broke up. Both became coworkers at the National Data Processing Bureau, while Himekawa's rank was higher.

Daigo and taichi

Nishijima asks Taichi about his career planning form.

In 2005, Nishijima goes undercover as a calligraphy teacher at the Tsukishima General High School's 11th grade, monitoring the second group of Chosen Children. Two of them, Yagami Taichi and Takenouchi Sora, attend his class. One day, in the week before June 19, he approaches Taichi in the hallway, calling him out for being the only one of his students who has not delivered his career planning form, and orders the boy to meet him in his office at lunch. There, Nishijima asks Taichi about what he is interested in, and Taichi mentions his friends "living far away", the Digimon, which Nishijima misinterprets as them being overseas. In response, he advises Taichi to study languages and encourages him to chase his dreams. At sunset, he talks to Himekawa about witnesses of the infected Digimon.

Daigo revealed

Nishijima explains who he is.

On June 19 night, after Kuwagamon attacks Tokyo, Nishijima shows up and drives Taichi to Haneda Airport in order to join Greymon in combating Kuwagamon. On June 20 morning, Nishijima is missing at school, but when Taichi and Ishida Yamato stop by his office that evening, he is present and officially introduces himself as a member of the National Data Processing Bureau. He informs the Chosen Children about what he knows about infected Digimon and the increasing distortions between the Real World and Digital World and asks for their help. Later, he reports to Himekawa about the conversation. Nishijima is later present on the sidelines of the Chosen Children's battle against Alphamon, commenting sourly when it becomes apparent that Alphamon managed a successful retreat.[1]

Daigo and maki in hot springs

Himekawa slaps Nishijima for revealing their past relationship.

A few days later, Nishijima and Himekawa are both assigned to join the Chosen Children’s trip to Ooedo-Onsen Monogatari. While driving Himekawa hands him the latest analysis of distortion areas and infected digimon movements. She informs him of their hypothesis that the infected digimon are hunting someone specific, and they both agree it is a reference to one of the children or their digimon. When they arrive, Nishijima greets Taichi and they both head outside where they meet Himekawa and the other children. He reveals that he and Himekawa used to date, to which she answers by slapping his back for telling them too much. Later, when they sit to eat, Nishijima tells them about his job to patrol their area, being part of a small and elite unit. In the hot spring bath, Taichi asks Nishijima to give them more information, however, he tells them that he doesn’t know much due to his rank.

Orgemon vs daigo and maki

Ogremon about to attack Nishijima and Himekawa.

When leaving, Nishijima shares with Himekawa that he’d like the children to be happy, however she tells him that personal feelings can hinder their mission. At night they report that all the children have returned home safely. However, just when they were ready to head home, they received an alert of an intense radio disturbance at Point Tango with high risk of a disaster. When they get there, Orgemon comes through a distortion, and Nishijima suggest calling the Chosen Children, but Himekawa responds that it is a chance to test their new weapons. When they fire, Nishijima notes that the weapons are working, but his observation seems inaccurate as Orgemon suddenly attack them. He throws one of their jeeps towards them and as Nishijima throws Himekawa and himself out of the way. Just before he is about to attack them again, he is restrained by Leomon who takes him back through the distortion.

Daigo and maki in festival

Nishijima and Himekawa in the school festival.

The day after tomorrow, Taichi, Sora, and Kōshirō stop by Nishijima’s office. He told them they managed to take care of the distortion without them and that they have enough information to predict locations of future distortions, where they will reinforce security. That being said, Infected Digimon are still expected to appear, so their help will be needed, and they should be careful. Another day in Himekawa’s office, Nishijima tells her that according to their latest data of predicted distortion locations, they need to increase security around Harumi. He also informs her that tomorrow is the school festival. The next day, at the school festival, Nishijima tells Himekawa tat security has been increased with permission for emergency evacuation, but he didn’t tell the children because he wanted them to enjoy the festival. During the festival, Nishijima tries to offer Himekawa to enjoy the school festival, though he notes that she didn’t like festivals when they were at high school either. They later go to the Dater’s Café, where they meet Mimi and Meiko.

Watching meicoomon fight

Nishijima and the others watch the fight.

Meiko informs them that the digimon are with Kōshirō at his office, Himekawang Nishijima disappointed that his student didn’t come to enjoy the festival. Agreeing with Nishijima, Himekawa sends Kōshirō images of Mimi dancing, convincing him to come. Nishijima suggests he’d go check on the digimon now that Kōshirō is coming, but Himekawa says she’ll go instead of him since he is a school employee. Sometime later, Nishijima approaches Himekawa, who has returned to the festival, informing her of a distortion behind the school, and they both run to where Himekawa has left Meicoomon. When they arrive, Meicoomon has already been taken by who appears to be the Digimon Kaizer and Imperialdramon, followed by Palmon and Gomamon. Unfortunately, the distortion is closed before the other digimon manage to get through and Nishijima watches as Kohiro connects them through the network and Rosemon, Vikingmon and Leomon defeat Imperialdramon. However, soon after they return, Meicoomon kills Leomon and leaves through a distortion, much to everyone’s shock. Himekawa leaves and Nishijima follows her, confused by what has happened. She tells him that the infected digimon and distortions are all caused by Meicoomon.[2]

Yamato with daigo and maki

Nishijima and Himekawa meet with Yamato.

Another day, Nishijima and Himekawa watch the news in her office on the plane’s emergency landing. Himekawa presumes that Meicoomon is responsible for the plane’s malfunctioning, and Nishijima questions why she hasn’t informed him that the Infected Digimon’s target was Meicoomon. Instead of answering his question she answers the phone and tells him that Professor Modchizuki arrived. Nishijima continues to argue that had he known about Meicoomon he might have been able to help at the school. Himekawa avoids his rant, saying their priority is finding countermeasures. In a later meeting, Nishijima listens to Himekawa’s damage report. After the meeting, Nishijima approaches Professor Mochidzuki trying to tell him that Meiko, his daughter, is going through a hard time missing Meicoomon, to which the professor apologizes for giving him a hard time. Later, Nishijima and Himekawa are approached by Yamato who wants more information. In an office, Himekawa hands Yamato a top-secret document “The Fifth Interim Report” covering the school festival events. When he questions about Ichijoji Ken, she explains that they always monitor the Chosen Children and tells him he shouldn’t worry about Ken. After Yamato leaves, Nishijima angrily tells Himekawa she shouldn’t have lied about Ken and Meicoomon, to which she answers she lied to keep them from panicking as well as protect their relationship with Meiko. Still angry, he asks why she kept that information from him as well, and Himekawa tells him he was better off not knowing.

Watching the children leave

Nishijima and Himekawa watch as the Chosen Children leave for the Digital World.

On another day at school, Nishijima receives a call from Himekawa about a distortion at Big Sight. When he arrives there, the children and their Digimon are already fighting. He quickly notices that Angemon is also infected and he’s worried that the infections are getting stronger. However, he can only watch as the Digimon fight the infection and Meicoomon, before being rebooted. A few days later, the children come to Nishijima’s office at school to inform him and Himekawa that they intend to go to the Digital World. Despite his protests, believing that it is too dangerous, Himekawa agrees and tells Nishijima to take the children back to Big Sight. After they arrive, Takeru tells them that he found out from Meiko that Meicoomon is the source of the infection and Nishijima apologizes for not telling them before. After Himekawa arrives and connects the D-3 and D-terminal, Nishijima watches as the Chosen Children open a Digital Gate and go through.

Daigo and hackmon

Nishijima talks with Hackmon.

Later, Nishijima tries to find Meiko at her house, but can't find her.[3] When he can't find her at Big Sight either, he calls Himekawa and leaves her a message saying he is unable to locate Meiko, asking her to call him if she contacts her. Nishijima returns to Himekawa’s office after he is informed tat Himekawa also went missing. He looks for clues in her computer and finds an e-mail from Gennai about the reboot and Ygdrasil. Before he finishes, he is approached by Hackmon, who tells him he is a messenger of Homeostasis, instead of Gennai. He tells him that Gennai has been corrupted by darkness and that Himekawa is in the Digital World, both now working for Ygdrasil. He explains that with their cooporation they must prevent Yggdrasil from using Meicoomon (AKA “Libra”). Hackmon than mysteriously disappears, leaving Nishijima alone in Himekawa’s office once again.[4]

Hackmon daigo and mochidzuki

Nishijima and Proffessor Mochidzuki talk with Hackmon.

In the morning, still at Himekawa’s office, Nishijima speaks on the phone questioning their lack of information, while the Chosen Children are in the Digital World. Later, he meets with Professor Mochidzuki, who tells him that Meicoomon has a special relationship with Meiko, who is the only one who can calm her down. Hackmon appears before them again, noting that Meicoomon is too powerful and unstable because she hold a shard of Apocalymon’s data. Meicoomon was outcasted and partnered with Meiko in order to keep it balanced and under control. He warns them that when Meicoomon’s suppressed power bursts, her partner’s power will have no effect on her. Nishijima asks how to stop it from happening, but Hackmon tells them they are out of time and the decision to destroy Meicoomon has been made. As Nishijima starts to protest, he receives a phone call that the Self-Defence Forces are about to be dispatched in support of Homeostasis, since they have already discussed with their government. Nishijima is angry that he wasn’t notified before, but Hackmon answers that telling him wouldn’t have helped. Hackmon leaves, leaving Nishijima with more questions.

Hiding in school

Nishijima and the Chosen Children hide at school.

Later, when the children finally return and are taken by the police into questioning for hiding their digimon, Nishijima arrives to claim their custody. Although the police were reluctant they released the children and Nishijima drove them to Tsukishima High School, because their homes were surrounded by the media. On the way, he informs them of Meicoomon’s rampage, and when they arrive at school they watch the news about the destruction. There he tells them of Homeostasis’ plan to destroy Meicoomon, which makes Meiko think of herself as a bad partner. The other children try to encourage her to not give up hope, and Nishijima agrees and tells them of Yggdrasil. He then goes to get food for the children and their digimon. He later came back right in the middle of Meiko’s scary story, startling the children. He then tells them that the media is still around their homes so they may need to move to a hotel, but the children prefer to stay at school.

Speaking with homeostasis

Nishijima and the others argue with Homeostasis.

The next morning, Meicoomon arrives and Nishijima and the children head out to face her. Nishijima notes that the same dark energy surrounded her during the plant explosion. When the digimon engage Meicoomon, Nishijima theorizes that her fear makes her more powerful. When Meiko tries to reach her Nishijima stops her. Then, a bright light appears in the sky, and from it, Jesmon emerges. Nishijima says it is the digimon sent by Homeostasis to destroy Meicoomon. They watch as the two digimon fight until they realize that Meicoomon tried to protect Meiko, and decide to drive Meicoomon to the ocean. When Homeostasis takes over Hikari’s body, Nishijima challenges her, saying that the children are not their pawns.

Daigo tries saving taichi

Nishijima tries to save Taichi.

After Homeostasis leaves, Nishijima and the children follow Meicoomon through the distortion to the Digital World. There Alphamon also appears and attacks Omegamon and Jesmon and in the process, the other digimon devolve. Suddenly, Nishijima feels that Himekawa was gone and that he failed to save her. Meiko then asks the other children to kill Meicoomon, believing it’s her only hope. As the group is divided in opinion about what to do, Meiko is running towards Meicoomon, as Yamato and Taichi follow her. Nishijima stops the other children from following and runs after Taichi himself. Jesmon tries to attack Meicoomon, but misses after Alphamon’s attack. His attack fractures the ground, threatening to swallow the children and Nishijima who are too close. Nishijima tries to save Taichi from falling but ends up falling right with him underground.[5]

Taichi and daigo in lab

Nishijima and Taichi in the laboratory.

Heavily wounded, Nishijima wakes up in an underground laboratory and is relieved to see Taichi is alright. They discover Motomiya Daisuke, Inoue Miyako, Hida Iori, Ichijōji Ken, and Gennai inside pods that also provide life support. Nishijima explains that they had gone missing after discovering Yggdrasil's plan and that he was ordered to keep it quiet by Himekawa, who apparently worked with Yggdrasil to revive her digimon partner. Dark Gennai arrives and states he shut the life support in the pods, that it is possible to save the trapped Chosen Children only by returning them to the Real World, but there is only a single pod remaining. If they do leave, however, the lab will self-destruct. Already bleeding to death, Nishijima tricks Taichi into entering the final pod and initiates the transfer sequence, giving Taichi some final advice about striving toward the future. After the transfer finishes, the lab explodes with Nishijima inside it.[6]

Trivia[]

  • Nishijima (西島) is a Japanese family name that means "west island", which might be a reference to Baihumon, the Harmonious One of the west. Daigo (大吾) is a Japanese male given name that combines the kanji for "large" (大) and "my" (吾).
  • Just like Taichi and Daisuke, his name starts with the Kanji for "large" or "great" (大/太), which could indicate that he was seen as the leader of the original Chosen Children. In addition, he used to wear goggles similar to those Taichi and Daisuke wore.
