Yagami Taichi (八神 太一) is the main protagonist in Digimon Adventure. He is a Chosen Child, partnered with Agumon, and holds the Crest of Courage. He is also the older brother of Yagami Hikari, who is also a Chosen Child.
Appearance[]
Taichi has spiky brown hair, brown eyes and slightly tanned skin. He usually wears light grey goggles with a black strap.[2] In 1995, as a small child, Taichi wears a blue long sleeved shirt with orange stars near the shoulders and a yellow collar, black pants with a gray vertical line on each side, white and blue sneakers with a yellow line in the back. His pajamas are a light blue buttoned shirt with blue buttons and pants.[3] At age 8, he wears a shirt with a star on the chest and two horizontal lines near the bottom, shorts, socks, and sneakers, all of undetermined color.[4]
In 1999, Taichi is taller, and wears his trademark goggles on his forehead over a blue headband and sports a blue T-shirt with orange stars on the sleeves, a yellow pocket on each side of the chest, and three buttons in the top, over a slightly longer yellow T-shirt with a turtleneck collar. He also wears brown cargo shorts, where he keeps his Digivice, a black armband on the left arm, white gloves, white loose socks with blue and white sneakers with yellow triangles on them.[2] His underwear is blue briefs with a white band on the top.[5] His soccer uniform consists of a red T-shirt with a white collar, lines on the sleeves and a white "10" on the back, white shorts with a vertical red line on each side and socks with red borders, and black and red football boots with white marks on them.[6] In 2000, during the battle against Diablomon, he wears similar clothes with a long-sleeved dark blue shirt underneath. He doesn't seem to wear his gloves, wristband, or sneakers, probably due to being indoors.[7]
By 2002, Taichi usually wears the Odaiba Middle School uniform; a white buttoned shirt with long sleeves under an open green blazer jacket, gray pants, white socks, and white and blue sneakers. He gave his goggles to Davis after the latter's goggles broke.[8] During summer, he wears a blue T-shirt with yellow borders and triangles on each sleeve and the front with a green shirt underneath. He also wears yellow wristbands on his hands, light brown shorts, gray socks, and blue and yellow sneakers with white soles.[9] During winter, he wears a blue shirt under a long blue hooded coat with yellow lines on the sleeve and pocket linings, a yellow paw print on the left breast and two yellow paw prints on the bottom back. He also wears blue track pants with white lines along the sides, white socks and white and yellow shoes with blue soles. He also wears his old headband at all times.[10] On March 25, 2003, Taichi wears a dark blue shirt with long sleeves under a blue button-up short-sleeved shirt with yellow stars on the sleeves and a pocket on the left breast, as well as black pants and shoes.[11]
In 2005, Taichi is 17 years old and usually wears the Odaiba High School uniform; a light blue buttoned jacket under an opened white dress shirt with blue tie, navy blue vest, black pants, and sneakers. In a chaotic battle against Kuwagamon and being joined by other two Kuwagamon at the Haneda airport, Taichi wears his blue soccer uniform. During the battle against Alphamon, Taichi wears a casual outfit, an orange short sleeved denim blazer with folded sleeves and a sign "17" in each sides, a white long sleeved undershirt, dark blue capris and black and white high-top sneakers and white socks. He gains a new goggles given by Izzy where he could see the distortions. He often seen wearing the goggles on his head or hanging loose on his neck.[12] During the summer, Taichi wears a summer version of his Odaiba High School uniform, with his short-sleeved button-up shirt loose, and his black neck tie.[13]
In 2010, Taichi is 22 years old and his spiky hair became slightly shorter and has a full fringe. His primary appearance has him wearing a medium blue short sleeved openly button shirt with a single left pocket, a white loose T-shirt underneath, black jeans and blue sneakers with white cross designs and white soles. When he takes Agumon to his apartment, he wore a blue, white and black short sleeved loose shirt, and khaki capris with gray folded sleeves at the edge. In the final battle with Eosmon, Taichi wears new goggles on his head and his outfit is similar to his primary appearance with his button shirt and undershirt being replaced with a medium blue short sleeved hoodie with a gray zipper.[14]
By 2027, Taichi wears a yellow shirt under a zipped bluish grey jacket with a blue collar. He also wears blue pants and shoes with yellow soles. At work, he wears white shirt under a black suit, and a blue tie.[15]
Personality[]
Taichi is energetic and adventurous. With his courage and right mindset, he leads the Chosen Children.[16] He is also acts impulsively and rushes without thinking the consequences, especially when his friends are in danger but is quick to realize and admit he has been wrong, and does whatever it takes to fix his mistakes. Despite his flaws, Taichi is very caring and considerate of others, even if his actions may cause some people to think otherwise. It takes time for him to learn how to be a leader, but eventually he grows into the unifying force that leads all the other Chosen Children and keeps them together. As a teenager, Taichi acts like the mellow and experienced mentor to the new Chosen Children. He is less brash but still easygoing.
Taichi is very close to Hikari and very protective of her, in part because of their past experiences. On her part, Hikari idolizes Taichi and confides in him even when they are older. Taichi and Hikari used to share a room, but sometime between Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02 Hikari has moved to another room.
Taichi's oldest friend is Takenouchi Sora, who has been in the same class as him since the first grade. In elementary school, they are both regulars in the soccer club. His closest friend is Izumi Kōshirō, who he met at the soccer club. As the adventurous leader of the group, Taichi is always the first to jump into action, though it often throws him into the path of danger. His ideas often conflict to the more rational and cautious Yamato, which leads them to fight. Despite this, the two are close friends.
In Digimon Adventure tri., Taichi's usual focus on the "big picture" leads him to become more cautious about battling after seeing the destruction caused by the Digimon's battles, and his resolve falters against the risk of collateral damage. When it becomes clear that Digimon like Alphamon will only cause more damage if they aren't stopped, Taichi makes the decision to fight against them, but he still remains reluctant to battle.
History[]
When they were young, Taichi and his younger sister Hikari lived with their parents in Hikarigaoka. Taichi attended Dai-san Elementary School, and was in the same first grade class as Takenouchi Sora.[17]
Digimon Adventure (Movie)[]

One night In 1995, Taichi wakes up late at night and sees Hikari looking at their dad's computer. Suddenly, a strange egg comes out of it. The next morning, Taichi realizes that the egg is real. While their mother is out, the egg escapes Hikari's grasp and rolls away. It then hatches into a Botamon and immediately latches onto Taichi's face. Taichi throws it off, and it runs under the nearby bed. Taichi tries to get it out by throwing his googles at it, but that just makes Botamon blow bubbles at him.

Hikari eventually gains its trust with her whistle and begins feeding it chocolate, causing it to evolve into Koromon. Then Hikari steals the food of their cat, Miko, and gives it to Koromon, who thanks her by latching onto her face as well and then Taichi's. Miko soon finds Koromon with its food, however, and lashes out. Taichi tries to protect him and they are both scratched by the cat. Soon after, Koromon introduces himself. He tells Taichi and Hikari that he is a digimon from the Digital World. They don't really understand this and later head to bed, but Koromon suddenly evolves into an Agumon and begins roaming the streets, causing destruction on a small scale, while carrying Hikari on his back. Taichi frantically chases after them.

Before he manages to cause any real casualties, a Parrotmon appears out of a huge egg in the sky. Agumon lashes out, which only angers the bird, causing it to destroy an overhead bridge and covering Agumon and the two kids in rubble. Out of the rubble, Greymon appears in Agumon's place and begins fighting back against Parrotmon. After a few minutes, Greymon is knocked out, and only awakens when Taichi blows Hikari's whistle as loud as he can. He then lets out a blinding fire breath attack, and the two digimon vanish, leaving Taichi and Hikari alone amongst all the destruction.[3]

After these events, people were convinced that the destruction was caused by a terrorist bombing. Taichi's family decided to move to Odaiba, like many other families.[17] One day, when Taichi was in second grade, Hikari was sick and stayed at home. When he returned from school he saw her watching TV and thought she was getting better, so he took her outside to play soccer with him. While playing, Hikari collapsed and was taken to the hospital. Their mother was so angry and worried she slapped Taichi. Hikari was in the hospital for three days in critical condition. When she got back home, the first thing she did was apologize that she couldn't play with him, which made him cry and feel even more guilty that she got hurt because of him.[4]

On August 1st, Taichi along with Ishida Yamato, Takenouchi Sora, Izumi Kōshirō, Tachikawa Mimi, Kido Jō, and Takaishi Takeru attend a school summer camp, that is hit by a sudden blizzard. The students take shelter, and after it stops all of them step outside and witness an Aurora outside. They are interrupted by what appears to be a meteor strike and discover that small electric devices landed for each member of the group. A portal then opens up in the sky and sucks them into an alternate dimension. Taichi wakes on hearing his name and he is shocked to see a bouncing pink ball-like creature named Koromon. He is then found by Kōshirō with another creature called Motimon who explains they are on File Island. Taichi climbs a tree and is attacked by Kuwagamon, who Koromon attacks back but gets hit in the process. They flee and hide in a holographic entrance of a metal tree until Kuwagamon leaves and hear Sora’s voice. They find that she also has a creature called Pyocomon with her. Soon, they encounter other cretures - Tokomon, followed by Takeru, Tsunomon held by Yamato, and Pukamon chasing after Jō. The creatures introduce themselves as “digimon” and Taichi and his friends introduce themselves as well. On hearing Mimi’s scream, they find her and Tanemon, fleeing Kuwagamon. The group flees again until they reach a cliff. The digimon all attack Kuwagamon at once, but they are hit. The children pick up their Digimon, but Kuwagamon gets back up. Their digimon partners leap out of the children’s arms, evolve to their child form, attack Kuwagamon and eventually knock him behind some trees. The group celebrates but Kuwagamon gets back up and breaks the cliff sending them all plunging into the river.[2]

The Children fall but are saved by Gomamon’s Marching Fishes. They reach a bank and decide to go to the ocean. As the group reaches their destination, they hear a phone ringing and find five telephone booths on the sand. The children try to use them, only to be given bizarre information. A short time later, the children take a break, and they try to assess their supply and food while Taichi and Agumon have already started eating. Suddenly, a geyser of water spits up out of the sand and Shellmon emerges. The digimon try to strike back at him but fail, except for Agumon who is the only one who has eaten. Taichi and Agumon attack Shellmon, but he pins Agumon down and catches Taichi. Shellmon begins to squeeze Taichi as he yells in pain, which causes Agumon to evolve into Greymon freeing Taichi. Greymon then defeats Shellmon, throwing him back into the ocean. After Greymon devolves back into Agumon, Taichi runs to him worried, finding that he is only hungry. After the fight, the children encourage the Digimon to eat in case they need the Digimon to fight.[18]

Later, the children are on top of a ridge when two Monochromon appear to fight over territory, and they run away. Eventually, the group finds a large lake and a trolley car on an island in its center, and they decide to camp there. During dinner, Taichi wonders about Yamato and Takeru’s relationship. Before going to sleep, Taichi teases Gabumon about his fur coat, making Yamato angry and they start to argue until Takeru asks them to stop. They later make amends during Taichi’s first watch, and Yamato tells Taichi about his and Takeru’s family situation. Later in his watch, Taichi pokes the fire, and a few burning coals land on a large red leaf-shaped object, which was Seadramon’s tail. Seadramon emerges and begins to drag the island through the lake. As the digimon’s attacks are not strong enough to harm Seadramon, Taichi tells Agumon to evolve again, but he cannot. During its rampage, Yamato is caught by Seadramon which triggers Gabumon’s evolution into Garurumon and defeats him. Later, on the shore, the children theorize that their digimon evolve when they are in danger, as also happened with Taichi and Agumon. The children then fall asleep while Taichi watches Yamato playing his harmonica with Takeru and their partners by their side.[19]

Sometime later, the children and their digimon are walking through a forest, when they suddenly see a black gear flying in the sky. The children see an opening in the trees and decide to leave the forest and walk out onto a desert-like plain. They walk for some time until Taichi spots a a village with his pocket telescope. When they arrive in the village, the children are surprised to see that it belongs to a large group of Pyocomon. After they look around, they find that the village’s water sources have dried up and burst into flames. The Pyocomon mention that Meramon should be protecting the mountain, but when Taichi looks through his telescope he sees Meramon coming down, screaming he’s burning. Taichi yells for everyone to run and they escape into the boat sunk into the now dry lake. Meramon shows and knocks out Piyomon, but Sora runs and catches her. Wanting to protect Sora, Piyomon evolves into Birdramon and manages to stop Meramon with Meteor Wing, extracting and destroying the black gear. After recovering, Meramon informs the children that he remembers a black gear, but not what happened afterward. He returns to protect the mountain and the Pyocomon serve the group a "feast".[20]

After continuing their journey, the children rest when Taichi sees something in the distance and discovers a large factory. The children go to explore the factory and split up into two groups. Taichi, Sora and Jō go one way with their partners, searching for people. They spot a doorway and inside they find Andromon, a noted good digimon, who is trapped between some gears. The children decide to help him and begin to pull him out. Taichi slips and falls back against a lever and the children manage to drag him out. However, when Andromon wakes he says they are intruders and attacks them. The children manage to escape until they find the others on the roof and yell for them to run, as Andromon attacks. Gabumon and Agumon evolve to fight him. Kōshirō runs a computer program to help Tentomon evolve into Kabuterimon. With his and Kōshirō’s help, the digimon manage to free Andromon from the Black Gear that controlled him. Later, Andromon apologizes for attacking the children, and shows them a way out of the factory in a nearby tunnel to the sewers.[21]

As the group keeps walking in the sewers, singing and talking they are chased down by Numemon, until they reach outside into the sunlight, making the Numemon hide from it. The group reaches a large field with vending machines, however, a horde of Numemon comes out from them and chases the group ant they split up. Soon, Monzaemon finds them (save for Mimi and Palmon), traps them with his Lovely Attack, and erases Taichi and the other children’s emotions, so they will become “toys for the toys” in his Toy Town. They are eventually saved by Mimi and Palmon, who evolves into Togemon and destroys a black gear that was inside of Monzaemon, saving him, their friends, and the Numemon. At sunset, Monzaemon apologizes to the children, and they discover that he was affected by a black gear. He thanks them by using his uncorrupted Lovely Attack, enveloping everyone in a bubble-like red heart.[22]

Later, the children walk in the forest as it gets colder, and they emerge from the trees to a large field covered in snow. The group sees a column of steam coming up from behind some trees, hoping it is a hot spring, but when they get there, they find that the water is boiling, and too hot to take a bath. They also find there a refrigerator full of eggs and decide to make dinner. Later, after the sun has gone down, Taichi and Yamato begin to argue about whether the group should go to Infinity Mountain – Taichi thinks it will provide an excellent view of the area, while Yamato is worried that it will be too dangerous. The next day, as the sun rises, the group discovers that Jō has gone climbing the mountain on his own and they go after him. Taichi, Agumon, Sora, and Birdramon arrive just in time to save Jō and Gomamon from Unimon. Jo tries to pull the black gear out of Unimon, but he throws him off, causing Gomamon to evolve into Ikkakumon to protect him, and he manages to free Unimon from the black gear. Now that they are mostly up the mountain, Taichi, Sora, and Jō continue to the peak, where they discover that they are on an island surrounded by an immense sea.[23]

The children regroup on the mountaintop as Taichi looks through his pocket telescope and tries to make a map, though not a good one. Following a loud sound, the children go back and are attacked by Leomon and Ogremon, who should be mortal enemies. The digimon evolve to fight the two digimon, when a sudden shower of large stones breaks off the cliff above them. After protecting their partners, the digimon revert to their child forms, exhausted, and find that Ogremon and Leomon are gone. The group makes it off the mountain and walks through a forest until they find a large mansion. They start to explore it, finding food and baths. After the baths, the group goes to sleep in a room with eight beds. During the night, Taichi escorts Agumon to the bathroom because he is afraid to go alone. When Agumon comes out, Ogremon bursts out to attack them. Taichi and Agumon run away, only to be met in the hallway by Leomon and Devimon. Devimon makes the mansion dissolve, leaving only ruins. The other children wake up in the beds, and Devimon sends them flying into the air. Agumon tells Taichi he has no energy, despite eating before, and Devimon reveals that the food and baths were illusions and that they are the Chosen Children. Devimon splits the island into many pieces that start to move away. Devimon also reveals that he took over the island using the black gears. Leomon charges, knocking aside Agumon, and grabbing Taichi. Suddenly, Taichi’s bed crashes next to them, and his digivice falls out by Leomon’s foot. It starts glowing and frees Leomon from Devimon’s control. Leomon demands that Taichi and Agumon flee, and pushes them onto a moving island, telling them that they are the only hope for the Digital World.[5]

Taichi and Agumon float on a bit of ice and run into a larger island fragment. The impact throws them into the air, and they sink into the snow. They are soon attacked by a black-gear-controlled Yukidarumon, but they manage to destroy the black gear and free him. Yukidarumon apologizes for attacking them and tells them that he saw another human and a Gabumon land on an island a short distance away. Yukidarumon offers to take them to the island and makes an ice bridge. When arriving at the island, Taichi and Agumon, reunite with Yamato and Gabumon. As they catch up, they talk about what they should do next. Yamato thinks they need to find everyone else, but Taichi points out that it would be difficult. Yamato gets agitated and the two start to fight. Their partner digimon cry for them to stop until Yamato finally reveals that he is worried about Takeru being alone. Suddenly the cliff breaks off, Taichi grabs Yamato’s hand and a tree branch while their digimon climb down trying to help. A black-gear-controlled Mojyamon appears and breaks the cliff further, sending everyone falling. They all land on Yukidarumon, who gives them food. After eating, Agumon and Gabumon evolve to Greymon and Garurumon. They manage to free Mojyamon from the black gear as well as find a wall of interlocking black gears and destroy them. Later, the gears in the wall start moving in the opposite direction, and the island fragment starts to move back towards Infinity Mountain.[24]

Taichi and Yamato arrive at Primary Village in time to protect Takeru from Leomon and Orgemon. As the other children arrive as well, Taichi uses his digivice to free Leomon from the black gears, making Orgemon to retreat. Finally reunited, Leomon tells the group about the legend of the Chosen Children. The children decide to face Devimon in battle with Leomon’s help. They go to Infinity Mountain and fight the well prepared Devimon, and Orgremon. As Devimon is too strong, the children and their digimon begin to lose. Devimon catches Patamon, who evolves into Angemon at the last minute, draws power from all the Digivices, and destroys Devimon with Heaven's Knuckle. They both of them fade as Devimon warns them about the dangers spreading across the sea, and Angemon reverts into a digiegg. As the children talk about Devimon’s last words, the ground fractures and a holographic image pops up of an old man.[25]
Server Continent Mission[]
The Chosen Children leave to Server Continent.
The old man greets the group as the “Chosen Children” and introduces himself as Gennai. He tells them how to come to Server Island and defeat their enemy there. Taichi and the children agree that they should go there. The children and their Digimon build a rhapsody with the help of their Digimon friends on file island. The Chosen Children live file Island on the raphsody deep into the ocean. The children were suddenly attacked and swallowed by Whamon. After Taichi frees him from the black gear controlling him, Whamon offers to take them to Server Continent. With his help they find the tags in an underwater cave, guarded by a black-gear-controlled Drimogemon. After freeing him, the children and their digimon return to Whamon with their tags.[26]

After five days of traveling by sea, Taichi spots Server Continent. When they arrive, they head to what should have been Koromon Village but found Pagumon Village instead. However, when Tokomon has disappeared, the children understand that it is truly a Koromon village and that the Pagumon imprisoned them and took over their village. When Taichi finds Agumon, Tokomon, and the imprisoned Koromon, Agumon evolves and drives the Gazimon away. However, they are soon attacked by Etemon and are defeated. The group, along with the freed Koromon, escape into the cave where they find Taichi’s crest and find an opening to a forest.[27]

Later, the children walk in a desert depressed, except Taichi, who is now more confident since he found his crest. Overconfident, Taichi makes Agumon eat everyone’s share of food in order to gain more energy and evolve. With Jo’s tag glowing, the group is headed to the Coliseum to look for his crest. There, they are trapped by Etemon, except for Agumon who is left in the field. Agumon evolves into Greymon and fights another Greymon who is controlled by Etemon but is losing because he ate too much. Luckily, the children find Jo’s crest and manage to escape the cage. Taichi keeps urging Greymon to evolve further, but as a result, he dark evolves into SkullGreymon. SkullGreymon attacks Taichi and the other evolved Digimon and after running berserk for some time he loses energy and devolves into Koromon. Taichi realizes that it is his fault that Greymon dark evolved and apologizes.[6]

Continuing their journey in the hot desert, they encounter Gennai’s hologram again. He explains to them that unless they nurture their Digimon well, they won’t evolve correctly. Before further explaining the connection is cut off and they find a cruise ship heading their way. After running out of the way, the ship stops, and the children manage to find refuge on it from the hot sun. When Taichi, Koromon, Jo, and Gomamon relax at the pool, they are suddenly attacked by the Numemon workers and Cockatorimon, who turns Agumon and Gomamon into stone and ties Taichi and the others in the sun. After being rescued by Sora, Piyomon, Mimi and Togemon, the group escapes the cruise ship until they find Mimi’s crest.[28]

As the children keep moving, Taichi and Agumon are attacked by Kuwagamon. Taichi and Agumon are afraid of dark evolving again, so they are reluctant to fight. Luckily, they are saved by Piccolomon, who takes them to train at his house. Taichi and Agumon were taken to special training in a cave. Suddenly, they found themselves in a boat in the middle of a pond. They kept floating until they reached a bridge where they saw a little Taichi trying to learn how to ride a bike. They are both reminded that they can’t lose heart and that evolving is just like riding a bicycle, so they shouldn’t fear it. After returning, Agumon evolved into Greymon and saved the Chosen Children and Piccolomon from Tyranomon. In the evening, the group leaves Piccolomon’s house.[29]

Later, the children manage to connect to Etemon’s Dark Network and receive an email asking for help in exchange for the rest of the crests. With this mysterious person’s help, the children find Takeru’s crest which was the opening of a cave filled with digimoji. Kōshirō hypothesizes that the Digital World is made of data, and so are they. The next morning, Taichi, Sora, Kōshirō, Jo, and their digimon head to the writer’s location inside Etemon’s pyramid. Taichi keeps acting recklessly because he thinks that he can’t get hurt since they are all made of data. They finally reach Nanomon, who was imprisoned by Etemon. They are soon discovered and attacked by Etemon, but Taichi manages to free Nanomon as their digimon fight him. However, Nanomon attacks the Chosen Children and Etemon and kidnaps Sora and Piyomon. Taichi and the others run after him but reach an electric fence. Taichi wants to try to get through the fence since he doesn’t believe he can get hurt, but Kōshirō tells him that if they die in the Digital World, they will really die. This shocks Taichi and installs fear in him, even when Kōshirō tells him where the safe passage is. However, before they manage to get through, their digimon are defeated. They are soon rescued by Garurumon and Togemon and manage to escape.[30]

Taichi is upset that he couldn’t save Sora and blames himself. The others reassure him that they will save her when they discover Nanomon’s secret room. While the others act as decoys, Taichi, koushiro, and their digimon head to the pyramid. However, they are soon found by Etemon. Kōshirō holds him back while Taichi heads towards Sora. Taichi and Agumon reach the electric fence and Taichi fosters all his courage to pass through it. When he succeeds, his crest glows. Taichi goes through while Greymon helps Kabuterimon to hold off Etemon. Taichi finds Sora and manages to steal back her digivice and crest from Nanomon. He catches her when a hole opens around her and returns her digivice and crest and Piyomon evolves to Birdramon and manages to rescue them. They all manage to escape and reunite with the other children outside the pyramid. However, the pyramid is destroyed by Etemon who was engulfed by his Dark Network and destroying anything in his path. Taichi’s crest is glowing and her and Greymon walk toward Etemon. Greymon then super-evolves into MetalGreymon and defeats Etemon. However, both Taichi and MetalGreymon get sucked into an interdimensional vortex and disappear.[31]
Chosen Children Reunite[]
Taichi leaves back to the Digital World, leaving Hikari behind.
Taichi and Koromon find themselves back in the Real World, in Odaiba, Tokyo. They quickly escape to Taichi’s house before people get suspicious about Koromon. Before entering, Taichi wonders for how long he has been gone and if his family remembers him. After entering he notices that it is still August 1st, 1999, the same day they had left for camp. Then Taichi’s sister, Hikari, comes out of her room and greets him. They are surprised that Hikari recognizes Koromon and is not afraid of him. Hikari reminds Taichi that she has a cold and that their parents had gone to visit their grandmother, as he accidentally reveals to her that he had gone to Koromon’s world. Taichi tries to see if the others have come back as well, but after calling them, understands that they didn’t. After eating and resting, Taichi notices that the rift from the digimon’s world causes all the strange weather around the world, but only he and Hikari can see the digimon. Suddenly Taichi receives a message from Koushiro who tells him to not come back to the Digital World. However, Taichi realizes he has to go back as digimon attack in the Real World. Ogremon attacks them, and Koromon evolves to fight him as a rift opens back to the Digital World. Before going back, Taichi promises Hikari he will come back.[32]

Upon returning to the Digital World, Taichi and Agumon look for the others using Taichi’s digivice. They find Tokomon along with Takeru’s digivice and crest. Tokomon tells Taichi that after they had left everyone separated, leaving Takeru to be tricked by PicoDevimon, who made Tokomon and Takeru fight. Taichi decides to look for Takeru and they find him in an amusement park. Taichi tries to reassure Takeru that everyone still cares about him as PicoDevimon arrives with mushrooms to eat. Luckily, Agumon hears a voice that tells him that the mushrooms cause memory loss, and he arrives in time to warn Taichi and the others. Takeru apologizes to Tokomon and Taichi returns his digivice and crest. Tokomon evolves into Patamon and attacks PicoDevimon with Agumon’s help. Eventually, Patamon and the group starts searching for all the others.[33]

Arriving at Digitamamon’s restaurant, they meet Gomamon and Gabumon working in the restaurant along with Jo and Yamato. Taichi suggests they should get out of there while no one is around and search for the others. However, Yamato disagrees and says he doesn’t want to go with Jo because he believes he will drag them down. Then Digitamamon and PicoDevimon appear to stop them, and Yamato and Jo realize that PicoDevimon tricked them. Digitamamon attacks and Gabumon and Gomamon evolve. Vegimon catches Jo after he saves Takeru, which causes Yamato to activate his crest, and Garurumon Super-evolve into WereGarurumon and defeats Digitamamon. Yamato then thanks and apologizes to Jo, but the group soon separates again to look for the others, agreeing on the bottom of the mountain as a rendezvous point.[34]

Taichi and Jo take a swan boat until they reach a castle from which a digivice signal comes. Inside the castle they find Gekomon and Otamamon running around in a hurry to serve their princess. They soon find out that the princess is none other than Mimi. Taichi and Jo try to convince her to come with them, but she refuses and prefers to stay in the comforts of the castle. Upon persisting she comes with them, Mimi orders the Gekomon to throw them out of the castle. However, the Gekomon decide to tell them how Mimi became their princess after they spoiled her too much when she promised to sing to them to awaken the lord of the castle. Taichi, Jo, Agumon, and Gomamon try to sing instead of Mimi to try and wake the lord but fail. Next, with Palmon’s help, they try to trick Mimi and record her singing. Unfortunately, Mimi finds out about their plan and throws them in jail. The next day, however, Mimi releases them, apologizes to the castle’s digimon, and sings to wake their lord. When TonosamaGekomon awakes, he is angry and attacks his people, who didn’t know he was a tyrant. Palmon, Agumon and Gomamon evolve and attack TonosamaGekomon with no success. Then Greymon super-evolve and manages to defeat him.[35]

The children regroup as Taichi and Jo bring Mimi with them, and Yamato and Takeru found Koushiro. Being the only one missing, they decide to look for Sora. The group is later attacked by Flymon but is saved by Birdramon. The children follow Birdramon and find Sora who tries to escape. Demanding an explanation, Sora tells them about PicoDevimon’s conversation she overheard about their crests. She tells them about the crests meaning and traits and that she doesn’t think the Crest of Love suits her because she believes her mother doesn’t love her. Taichi tries to convince her that this is not true and that she shouldn’t pay attention to PicoDevimon’s words, but she only cries. Luckily, Takeru manages to cheer her up a bit. At night, they are attacked by PicoDevmon and then Vamdemon. The digimon try to attack but fail. Finally, Piyomon evolves into Birdramon to attack Vamdemon, but gets hit, making Sora activate her crest and make Birdramon super-evolve into Garudamon. Garudamon attacks Vamdemon and while he is distracted, they all escape united once again.[36]
The Eight Chosen Child[]

Later, the children receive news from Gennai that there is another Chosen Child living in Japan and that they need to find their new comrade before Vamdemon does. Outside Vamdemon’s castle, Gennai tells the children about the Gate to Earth, as they wait for the disguised Agumon and Palmon to sneak them in. After they get into the confusing castle, the children look for the Gate. However, when they find it, Vamdemon has already opened the Gate and his soldiers delay the children, letting him escape. They are then attacked by Tailmon, one of Vamdemon’s henchmen, and Devidramon. The Gate eventually closes before they manage to pass through.[37]

The children manage to escape the castle and speak with Gennai. In order to open the Gate again, the children go to Gennai’s house. There he gives them the special cards that open the Gate and explains their mission. The next day, the children head to Vamdemon’s castle again to try and open the Gate. As they manage to get to the Gate, they try to figure out how to use the cards to open it. Meanwhile, the castle starts to break apart, and the children appoint Taichi as their leader and decide which cards to use, but Taichi decides that Kōshirō should choose the cards. Koushiro manages to figure out the puzzle, except for two cards. Suddenly they are attacked by Dokugumon. The digimon evolve and attack while Taichi decides which is the last card. The gate opens and the children manage to get through back to their summer camp with their digimon.[38]

The children soon find out that everyone in the camp is sent back home because of the snow. They disguise their digimon as plush toys to avoid unwanted attention. In order to get to Hikarigaoka, where Vamdemon is searching for the eighth child, Taichi and the others convince their teacher to drop them off there, saying they want to see their old home again, and promising to go straight home later. When arriving, the children all discover that all of them used to live in Hikarigaoka at the same time and that all their families move due to a terrorist bombing. Suddenly, they discover Mammon rampaging in the streets. While Birdramon fights Mammon the children remember that it wasn’t a terrorist attack that ruined the city, but two digimon who fought in the street. When Garudamon defeats Mammon, Taichi remembers that one of the digimon was a different Greymon. The children manage to escape the scene before the police arrive and decide to search for the eighth child in Odaiba since they must have lived in Hikarigaoka and moved as well.[17]

To get back to Odaiba, the children take the train. Exhausted, the children fall asleep on the train and miss their station at Nakano and wake up at Shinjuku. After the digimon say they are hungry, Taichi and the others go to a hamburger restaurant. Soon they are joined by Jo and Kōshirō who accidentally separated from them. Since spending all their money on food, the group tries to hitch a ride back to Odaiba. They manage to catch a ride with a van driver but are forced to stop by Tokyo Bay because of Koromon’s dropping. The van driver is upset and pushes Koushiro back who falls into the water but is saved by Tentomon. Suddenly they are attacked by Gesomon. Ikkakumon fights and defeats him, and then takes the children on his back to Odaiba.[39]

As Taichi approaches home, he wonders if Hikari might be the eighth child since she remembers what happened four years ago. When he arrives, he tells his mother camp was canceled and pretends that Koromon is a gift toy for Hikari. He then hugs his parents, bursting into tears, to their confusion. Later, Taichi eats while sneaking food for Koromon. Back in his room, Koromon asks Taichi why he cries, though he won’t answer. Taichi asks Hikari what she remembers from Hikarigaoka and sees that she remembers everything. Koromon asks her if she has a digivice, but she doesn’t, which calms Taichi’s concern that she might be the eighth Chosen Child and he and Koromon immediately fall asleep. After some time, his mother wakes Taichi up after a phone call he missed from Kōshirō. Taichi calls him back, but he wasn’t home, which makes Taichi wonder why he called. Suddenly his digivice is beeping and he runs out to follow its signal, thinking it might be the eight child.[40]

The next day, on August 2nd, Taichi is looking for his first-grade phonebook. Koushiro came over to Taichi and together with their digimon they go to a meeting with the others in the park. Since Koushiro got a signal of the eight digivice in Shiba-ura, the children decide to search the area. They split up to smaller groups to cover more areas. Taichi and Koushiro team up, searching for the eighth child, but get no signal. As they keep searching, they notice Birdramon fighting in Tokyo Tower. They arrive in time on Kabuterimon and discover that both Birdramon and Togemon fight DeathMeramon. Agumon also evolves into MetalGreymon and defeats him.[41]

In the evening, Taichi returns home and gets a phone call from Jo, telling him to find his old phone book. Next, he receives a phone call from Yamato who tells him that he fought Vamdemon at Shibuya and that he killed his own subordinates. Later, Agumon tells Taichi that someone speaks with Hikari outside, and they discover it’s Tailmon and Wizarmon. Taichi warns her about them, but Hikari tries to explain before Agumon fires at Tailmon, who tries to protect Hikari. They tell Taichi that Tailmon is Hikari’s digimon partner and that Hikari is the eighth Chosen Child. Taichi is still suspicious of Wizarmon, even though he found Hikari’s digivice. Wizarmon gives Taichi the digivice so that Vamdemon won’t find her. Then Tailmon and Wizarmon leave them to get Hikari her real crest from Vamdemon’s headquarters. As they watch from the balcony, Taichi decides to go and help them out, telling Hikari to stay put. Taichi and Greymon arrive at the scene but still cannot prevent Vamdemon from kidnapping Tailmon.[42]

At night, Taichi tries to calm Hikari, who is worried about Tailmon, saying they will all save her tomorrow. On the next morning of August 3rd, before his morning soccer practice, Taichi tries to make some calls, but the phone is not working. When they hear the doorbell, they are attacked by a group of Bakemon. Taichi and Hikari are saved by Agumon, but their mother is kidnapped. Agumon evolves into Graymon, breaking a part of the building, while rescuing Taichi and Hikari. He tries to save their mother, but is attacked by Phantomon, forcing him to retreat. They meet up with Yamato and Gabumon at a hideout in Aqua City as they update eachother about the current situation. Taichi tries to cheer Hikari up, who thinks it’s her fault everyone was captured. He tells her to stay hidden with Yamato while he goes to try and save everyone. As Taichi and Agumon ambush a Bakemon, they find Sora. She tells them that Vamdemon holds everyone at the Big Sight center, including, Mimi and his parents. Taichi sends her to get Yamato and Hikari.[43]

Taichi and Agumon head to Big Sight to save Mimi and his parents, as he notices Vamdemon leaving the site with Tailmon. Taichi and Agumon hurry into Big Sight and are attacked by a group of Bakemon. Agumon evolves and destroys them before they meet Mimi, who tells them everyone was put to sleep and Vamdemon has found the eighth child. Understanding something must have happened to Hikari, Taichi and Mimi hurry to Fuji TV headquarters. Taichi appears just in time to bring her the digivice, but PicoDevimon steals it from her. As Phantomon about to attack him, Greymon super-evolves and tries to attack Vamdemon, but his attack fails, just like the others. Vamdemon tries to attack Hikari and Tailmon, but Wizarmon sacrifices himself to protect them. As Hikari cries, her digivice activates and Taichi catches it from PicoDevimon, returning it to Hikari. Tailmon super-evolves into Angewomon, who defeats him using all of the other digimon powers. All the children escape the TV station as it collapses. However, before they manage to properly celebrate, they notice that the fog has not yet lifted.[44]

The children receive an email from Gennai, who tells them how to defeat Vamdemon through a prophecy. Puzzled by this, Taichi and the others return to Big Sight and notice that all the people are still asleep. After some time, all the people start chanting Vamdemon’s name though not regaining full conciseness. The children figure out the part of the prophecy which foretells that at 6:06:06 Vamdemon will resurrect. Taichi and Yamato, with Yamato’s father’s help, have only 6 minutes to get back to the TV station. When they get there, they find VenomVamdemon. Agumon and Gabumon evolve, but VenomVamdemon is too strong even for their Perfect form. Taichi and Yamato go to get reinforcements as MetalGreymon and WereGarurumon hold him off. They go back to the scene with Hikari, Angewomon, Takeru, and Angemon, as well as Koushiro, his parents, and Tentomon. When they return to the site, Agumon and Gabumon have already devolved only to be saved by Angewomon and Angemon. The children figure out the rest of the prophecy that requires Angewomon and Angemon to shoot arrows at Taichi and Yamato. By doing so, Agumon and Gabumon Warp-evolve into WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon, their Ultimate form.[45]
Taichi and the others return to the Digital World.
The newly evolved digimon manage to inflict damage on VenomVamdemon, but only making him angrier. Taichi and the others follow the battle from the van, but it is hit by falling rubble. They escape but get separated. Taichi searches for Hikari as the other children and their digimon join the fight. They all attack together and inflict serious damage, but VenomVamdemon is still not defeated. The children’s crests then light up and bind him, allowing WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon to attack him at full force and destroy him. All the people wake up, and the fog has cleared, but the continents from the Digital World started to appear in the skies all over the world. Trying to understand what is happening, Taichi uses his monoculars to check the sky but notices a crashing airplane that is also attacked by a Kuwagamon but is saved by Garudamon and Kabuterimon. Seeing it is the only way to save their world, Taichi suggests they all return to the Digital World using their digivices. As they return, the children say their goodbyes as their parents arrive at the scene.[46]
The Dark Masters[]

Upon returning to the Digital World the children and their Digimon notice that Earth is visible through the sky. They then encounter Chūmon who tells them that now the Dark Masters control the Digital World, which has been ruined, reshaped, and twisted into Spiral Mountain. Soon the group is attacked by MetalSeadramon. The Adult-level evolved Digimon are easily defeated by the Ultimate Digimon and the group is blasted away to Mugendramon’s area, where the Perfect-level evolved partners also lose, and fall into a space and are attacked by Pinocchimon. The children and their devolved partner Digimon fall again to the Colosseum, where a strange clown that tells them a picture story of their defeat, reveals himself to be Piemon. Agumon and Gabumon both Warp-evolve to match the Ultimate Digimon, but are ultimately defeated. As the children are in a pinch, Piemon introduces all four Dark Masters, before killing Chūmon, who protected Mimi. Finally, they are saved by Picklemon who holds the Dark Masters off, letting them retreat.[47]

The children find themselves by the ocean where Agumon first evolved into Greymon. They hear someone yelling for help from the water and the children use a canoe to get there. However, they find Shellmon who only tries to attack them. The children are saved by their Digimon, who chase Shellmon away. Later they discover a beach hut on the beach, and all the children run inside except for Mimi who Jo tripped. The children inside get trapped and are attacked by Anomalocarimon until they are unconscious. They later wake up and manage to escape with Mimi and Jo’s help before MetalSeadramon burns the hut. Outside they are again attacked by MetalSeadramon. Lylimon distracts him while the others escape on Zudomon’s back. Unmatched, Lylimon and Zudomon devolve. The children are saved by Whamon who lets them hide in his body and escape.[48]

While resting and eating, Kōshirō tells Taichi and the others how WarGreymon might defeat MetalSeadramon, which cheers Taichi up. When warned by the fish that the enemy is close, the children escape with Whamon once again. As they are found by the Hangyomon, Taichi asks Whamon to go up to the surface so they can fight, but Whamon dives deeper instead using the water pressure to repeal the enemy. When found by MetalSeadramon, they are chased up to the surface, where Taichi lets Agumon warp-evolve and fight, while he and the children evacuate. Although WarGraymon defeats MetalSeadramon, Whamon is killed during the battle. With his final words, Whamon asks the Chosen Children to save their world, before the ocean area of Spiral Mountain disappears.[49]

As the ocean is freed, the children cheer up while Mimi makes graves for the Digimon they lost. Determined to take down the enemy and avenge them, Taichi doesn’t understand Mimi’s fear, which angers Yamato who claims Taichi is inconsiderate. Taichi argues that stopping every time to mourn would hinder their mission. As Taichi questions his behavior while walking in the forest, the ground starts moving. The group climbs a tree, but Taichi is suddenly transported away. As children keep appearing and disappearing, Taichi ends up by Sora’s side, when Taichi is suddenly turned upside down and falls on his head. When the ground moves again and the group reunites, Yamato tells them that Takeru was taken by Pinocchimon. Before they can go save him, they are attacked by Kiwimon, whom the Digimon destroy. While Taichi tries to calm an angry Yamato who wanted information about Takeru, Takeru suddenly arrives unharmed and tells them about Pinocchimon.[50]

While the children talk to Takeru, Yamato and Gabumon disappear and the others start searching for them. When Jo says he saw him leave, it angers and confuses Taichi. The children keep looking as Taichi states that they are weaker when apart. They suddenly encounter Pinocchimon who orders Garbemon to attack them. The children run as the Garbemon chases them. After disappearing, the evolved Digimon attack them, but the Garbemon disappear, only to ambush them later. Finally, two are defeated by lillymon and MetalGreymon. When the last Garbemon faces MetalGraymon he pretends to surrender, but then attacks the children. Taichi, Hikari and Tailmon hold on to MetalGreymon as to not be sucked by its trash can. When Hikari loses her grip, she is saved by MetalGarurumon and Yamato, and although Taichi is happy that he is back, Yamato demands that Taichi and Agumon fight them.[51]

While the children try to calm Yamato down, Taichi argues with him and walks away, only to be stopped by MetalGarurumon and challenged to a fight once again. As Agumon warp-evolves and the two Digimon fight, Taichi and Yamato start punching each other as well. Taichi still tries to convince Yamato that this is a senseless battle to no avail when they are suddenly stopped by a bright light. The group then sees Hikarigaoka and the Greymon and Parrotmon from four years ago. A mysterious being speaking through Hikari shows and tells them about that incident, and takes them on a tour to the past, explaining digitamas, digivices and crests were created, how they chose them, and how Gennai saved their digieggs and digivices from the Dark Masters. After telling the story, they all return to the forest and Taichi tries to reconcile with Yamato, who instead decides to walk his own path, followed by Mimi, who also decides to leave the group with Jo accompanying her. The five remaining children move on, separated again.[52]

While walking, the group feels an earthquake caused by a meteor. The children wonder what to do about Pinocchimon, and Taichi begins to wonder what Yamato would do and start to doubt himself. Finally, he decides to investigate before deciding. Noticing Sora’s doubt, Taichi reassures her that if there is any danger, he and Agumon will protect them while they escape. While investigating Pinocchimon’s mension, Taichi notices only Floramon and Deramon guarding it. Taichi wants to go and investigate further on his own, but the others convince him they should come too. After attacking the guards, the two claim they don’t work for Pinnochimon, and in Pinocchimon’s absence, agree to guide them in his mansion. When they walk into a booby trap in the mansion, Taichi accuses Deramon of betraying them, which Deramon sincerely denies. When Pinocchimon returns, the children convince Floramon and Derumon to use a cannon against him.[53]

As the two Digimon shoot, Taichi and the others are amazed at their enthusiasm. When Pinocchimon finally closes in, the children move to face him, but he runs and lures them into a RedVeggiemon ambush. The Digimon evolve and attack, defeating the RedVeggiemon, while Agumon warp-evolves to WarGreymon and attacks Pinocchimon. However, Pinocchimon uses his strings to control WarGreymon’s movements and attack Taichi and his friends. Although the other Digimon evolve to their Perfect form and manage to corner Pinocchimon, he uses his own mansion to attack them. The children run as their Digimon hold off the mansion when suddenly it breaks apart. They find that Yamato destroyed Pinocchimon before the ground starts shaking and reforming, and as the forest disappears, the children escape.[54]

As the children continue their journey in Mugendramon’s domain, Hikari becomes sick, which worries Taichi greatly. Upon reaching a big city, they get to a house and start searching for medicine. When they do not find any, Taichi and Koushiro manage to find the right medicine in the nearest hospital by connecting to the network. They are soon attacked by Machidramon’s army, and manage to escape to another building, where they try to find the best route back using the network. However, they notice that the army surrounds them again, and realize that they are being tracked through the network. Attacked by Megadramon they escape and find safety in a church, where Taichi gets angry at Koushiro, and then explains why he is so worried about Hikari. Although they manage to evade the enemy, the Digimon army decides to level down the whole city. Worried, they return to the house, but it is destroyed before Taichi can enter. When a missile that was heading toward Taichi is intercepted by Angemon, they discover that Hikari and the others were safe, before they are attacked by Mugendramon and fall into the darkness.[4]

When reaching the surface, Taichi, Agumon, Koushiro, and Tentomon start looking for the others. Worried, Taichi calls for Hikari, even though Agumon and Tentomon are exhausted. When Koushiro tries to stop Taichi, they appear to start to fight, but Taichi tells him someone is tailing them. They pretend to keep fighting until they hide, and the Digimon try to evolve but fail because they are too tired. Taichi apologizes to Koushiro about the fight, before Andromon comes into sight. When he tries to help them find Hikari, Mugendramon appears. As Andromon tries to hold him off, a glowing Hikari and the others appear. The children watch as Birdramon, Angemon, Angewomon, and Andromon fight Mugendramon, though they are not strong enough. When Mugendramon kills a horde of Numemon, Hikari releases her light energy, helping Agumon warp-evolve. As WarGreymon engages in battle, Taichi holds the unconscious Hikari, worried. In one move, WarGraymon manages to defeat and destroy Mugendramon which causes his controlled area to deconstruct, and the children fly to the next domain.[55]

After Taichi and the others reach the top of Spiral Mountain, they get data about Spiral Mountain and the Dark Master’s base using Andromon’s network. When confronted by LadyDevimon, and the partners evolve to fight her, Taichi stops Agumon from joining. After looking at Ladydevimon’s data, Taichi tells Sora and Takeru to go and find Yamato and the others and bring them back, as Angewomon and Kabuterimon should be able to take her down and they need everyone’s power to defeat Piemon. After Sora and Takeru leave, and LadyDevimon is defeated, Piemon emerges, as Taichi tells Agumon to evolve.[56] As WarGreymon’s attacks are ineffective, Taichi tells the others to wait for the others’ return and regain their strength, even though he and WarGreymon are hit by Piemon’s attacks and lose consciousness. When Taichi hears Yamato’s voice he wakes up, and as their friendship is repaired, so is WarGreymon’s strength.[57] As Taichi is taken to safety, Gabumon warp-evolves and both Ultimate Digimon manage to inflict damage. However Piemon makes the two Digimon disappear, as well as Taichi and Yamato, turning them into keychain puppets. Luckily, they are all restored thanks to the newly super-evolved HolyAngemon. Just when Piemon reappears with an army of Evilmon, Mimi returns with many allies, and together with the rest of the Digimon they manage to defeat Piemon.

Later, the children receive an email from Gennai saying their real enemy is not yet defeated as the ground starts to shake. [58] After the children fall into the darkness, they receive a video call from Gennai, who explains they must beat the source of evil plaguing the digital world. He also tells them about this evil’s origin, and the original Chosen Children. Trying to understand what they are going to fight, a Digimon named Apocalimon emerges, a manifestation of the dark hearts of the Digimon who have disappeared through the evolution process. He attacks the Chosen Children, who are shielded by their partners, and then uses his Death Evolution to devolve their Digimon. Before they manage to evolve once more, Apocalimon steals the crests from the children and destroys them. As some of them begin to lose hope, Taichi is certain there must be a way to win. However, the children and their Digimon suddenly begin to dissolve and disappear. The children find themselves in a world of pure data, and wonder if they have lost. But soon the children realize they cannot give up, and that the power of their crests is still within them, which allows their Digimon to evolve again. [59]

Reappearing in front of Apocalimon, the group works together and they manage to defeat Apocalimon’s physical body. However, Apocalimon self-destructs, trying to take the children with him. But before the explosion reaches them the children’s digivices activate and create a forcefield that contains and dissolves it. After their victory, the children are approached by their Digimon allies and Gennai. They tell them that the Digital World will now be recreated along with the Digimon who perished. They all head back to the Village of beginnings, which has been restored, and take a picture together. Later, the children rest by the lake and think they can stay in the Digital World for the rest of their summer vacation, however, Gennai tells them that the Gate to the Human World is about to be closed and that time is now synchronized in both worlds, therefore they have to prepare to leave. While saying goodbye to their partners, Taichi and Agumon reminisce old memories from their early adventures and laugh. Saddened that the time has come, the children get on the trolly and say goodbye to their Digimon partners as they leave. [60]

During December of 1999, the Chosen Children and their partners are captured by Millenniummon and held hostage. Only Agumon is spared, and it is he who brings Akiyama Ryō to the Digital World. Taichi is the last to be rescued, being saved only when Ryō finally defeats Millenniummon in his Lair. Taichi reunites with Agumon and thanks Ryō for his help before returning to the Real World.

On March 4, 2000, Taichi was writing an apology e-mail to Sora, when he was suddenly approached by Hikari who startled him. He accidentally put a heart at the end of the letter and Hikari tells him she was going to a friend's birthday, and clicks the send button thinking she was helping. Horrified, Taichi watches as the letter is being sent, however, he received a notification that it was rejected which angers him, thinking Sora doesn't want to receive his messages. Later, Complaining there is nothing to eat, Taichi's mother suggest she'd make a cake, asking him to get her some eggs. The doorbell rings, and Koushiro is at the door, telling him about a digitama that hatched. They notice it evolves and consumes data to grow. They hurry to connect through Taichi's father's computer and see it has evolved again. Wishing Agumon was with them, Taichi starts hearing his voice, and suddenly realize that they were contacted by Gennai, Agumon, and the other digimon. Gennai sends Agumon and Tentomon into the Network, while Taichi tries to contact the others, but fails.

Returning to the computer, Agumon and Tentomon are ready to battle the digimon and attack him, though not inflicting much damage. The two evolve and attack him again, but he manages to further evolve. Greymon and Kabuterimon attack him again, but he is too strong. Realizing he is a Perfect-level digimon, Greymon and Kabuterimon try to super-evolve, but before the evolution is completed, he attacks them, making them devolve back to Child form. Taichi and Koushiro recieve many emails from children all over, among them an incoherent email from the digimon who is in the NTT system. Taichi tries to contact everyone again, but everyone's phone is busy. Suddenly, Taichi recieves a phone call from the digimon who has hacked all the phone switches and calls all the phone numbers, trying to shut the system down. Suddenly the internet disconnects and Koushiro immediately leaves Taichi's house. Taichi sees on TV that they reccoment using the voice mail system, which doesn't use the phone switches, and he starts to leave messages to all the others. When Koushiro is back, they reconnect to the internet using a satellite cell phone. Then they finally manage to contact Yamato and Takeru through voice messages and tell them to find a computer and join the fight.

When Yamato and Takeru finally manage to connect to the internet, Gabumon and Patamon join the fight. When entering the network, Agumon and Gabumon emmediatly warp-evolve, and attack the digimon. However, it evolved to Diablomon again and hits Patamon and Tentomon. WarGraymon and MetalGarurumon keep attacking, when suddenly Taichi's computer froze, immobilizing WarGreymon. When finally reconnecting, they find their digimon lost and can barely move. Koushiro reads email from around the world, angering Taichi, as Diablomon start replicating and launches a nuclear missile from a US military base. Understanding that the only way to prevent the fuse from activating is destroying Diablomon, WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon head to fight him, but they are not fast enough to avoid his attacks. They realise their movement has been slowed down due to all the emails that have been sent to them, and Koushiro tries to send everyone back to stop sending them. However, it is too late, and the digimon stop moving. Taichi and Yamato manage to enter the network and revive their digimon and they fuse to become Omegamon. This new evolution gave Omegamon the strenght to fight Diablomon and destroy his replicas. After sending him all the emails they recived, Diablomon slowed down and they manage to destroy him at the last possible second. Taichi got back and his e-mail was finally sent to Sora, who replied an apology and thanked him for her birthday present.[7]

Not long afterward, Ryō is called to the Digital World to take care of the last remaining Diablomon clone, but the task is actually a ruse by Millenniummon to call Ryō back to the Digital World. Millenniummon tears the Digital World in two, petrifying Taichi and Agumon in the process. Once Millenniummon and his final MoonMillenniummon is defeated, Taichi and Agumon are released.
D-1 Tamers[]
A short time later, Ryō is recalled to the Digital World to participate in the D-1 Tournament. Taichi is the master of Grade 1, fielding WarGreymon, Triceramon, and Cyclomon. After Ryō defeats Taichi, he reveals that the entire tournament was organized by the Harmonious Ones in order to train Ryō to defeat Millenniummon, who has revived once more. Taichi asks Ryō to forgive them for the deception, despite the fact that he didn't know of the lie in the first place, and to not blame the Harmonious Ones. He only recieves stony silence in response, and he leaves with the other Chosen Children and Tamers.

Taichi and the other Chosen Children were called back to the Digital World by Gennai. He told them that even though they defeated Apocalymon, the Digital World was still trapped by the power of darkness. The children had to release the force that protects the Digital World, using their crests, in order to fully fix its distortion. The power of their crests restored the Digital World, but without it, their digimon partners lost the ability to evolve to their Perfect and Ultimate level.[61]

One day, on 2002, Taichi’s gets a signal on digivice from the Digital World, where he finds Agumon and the other digimon under attack. When he sees Agumon can't evolve, they run, until Tailmon leads them into a cave, and he sends an email calling for help. Inside the cave they find a strange object with the Crest of Courage on it. When Taichi tries to pick it up, it glows and releases three lights that fly away. After a while, he meets with Hikari, Takeru, and surprisingly, Motomiya Daisuke. Back in the cave, Taichi witnesses Daisuke’s digivice and he wonders if Daisuke is a Chosen Child. Tailmon informs them that the Digimon Kaiser has a similar digivice, which prevents them from evolving. Taichi tells them about the object, and when Daisuke succeeds in removing it, a Child-level digimon named V-mon appears from inside the light, introduces himself, and thanks Daisuke for lifting the Digimental of Courage. Suddenly, they are attacked by a Monochromon and run out of the cave. Daisuke eventually activates the Digimental, and V-mon armor-evolves into Fladramon, who releases Monochromon from the Black Ring controlling him. Taichi congratulates Daisuke and gives him his own goggles, to replace Daisuke’s broken ones, before returning home.[8] In the evening, Taichi and the other original Chosen Children, save for Mimi, meet up in the park to discuss the situation. The next day he decides to return to the digital world, along with Sora and Kōsirō, but Taichi has to stay behind to distract their old teacher, Mr. Fujiyama. When he finally managed to get rid of him, it is evening, and the others returned.[62]

Later on, Taichi and Agumon help the new children successfully rescue a group of Gotsumon from the Digimon Kaiser and they return to the Real World with them. The next day, Taichi returns with them to find that Gabumon was able to evolve after damaging the Dark Tower. The children destroy it, thus freeing the digimon from the Black Rings’ control in the area. Taichi returns the Gotsumon to their area, where they destroy the Dark Tower.[63] Sometimes later, Taichi gets a call from Iori, who informs him that Hikari is trapped in the Digital World. Lying to his mother that he’s going to pick up Hikari from a friend, he heads to Digital World. When he reaches Hikari, he notices Andromon who is under control of a Black Ring. Taichi confronts Andromon, who becomes more confused, and lifts Hikari up. She manages to free him from the Black Ring using her digivice, and he destroys the Dark Tower in the city and frees the digimon. Returning home late, they find an angry Koushiro who kept the lights on for them. As Taichi tries to calm him Koushiro tries to tell them about the new digivices' analysis, but Taichi tells him to explain it all tomorrow since they are all late for dinner.[64] On another day, Taichi attends Daisuke’s soccer practice. Later, he and the children read about the prodigy, Ichijouji Ken, who will play against Daisuke’s team on Sunday. Taichi attends the game on Sunday, cheering and advising Daisuke. They watch the game as Daisuke’s team is in lead, until Ken arrives to help his team, which eventually wins 9-1. As they return home in the evening, Taichi tries to motivate Daisuke to do better, though he didn’t feel bad for losing.[65]

Later, Taichi was notified that Agumon is enslaved by the Digimon Emperor, who has been revealed as Ichijōji Ken. After school, he anxiously awaits the others, and decides that a reluctant Miyako should stay behind. In the Digital World they meet with Tentomon trying to gather information, when they suddenly find a freed Agumon at Locomotown. Before managing to get Agumon to safety they are found by the Digimon Kaiser, and before Agumon can join the fight, he is enslaved again by an Evil Spiral and attacks Taichi, who is saved by Daisuke. After Agumon dark-evolves into a virus MetalGraymon, Taichi tries to approach him, but MetalGreymon attacks them. Daisuke tries to hold Taichi back, while the other digimon try to stop him, to no avail. After MetalGraymon is taken away, Miyako arrives with Yamato, who punches the indecisive Taichi, knocking him to his senses. Taichi then asks them to not hold back when fighting Agumon before they move on.[66] On their way, Daisuke and Takeru get into a fight, which Taichi and Yamato surprisingly encourage. Soon they receive a signal of a digimental and find the Digimental of Friendship, which all the children try to lift and fail. Taichi and Yamato push Daisuke to try and pull it, but he seemingly can’t. When Patamon is suddenly caught by the Digimon Kaiser and MetalGreymon, he is saved by Garurumon, who joins the fight. Even though Taichi tells the younger Chosen Children to fight MetalGreymon, Daisuke is reluctant to hurt him. Taichi and Yamato explain to him that he must believe in his friends, teaching him an important lesson leading to the activation of the new digimental. V-mon armor evolves to Lighdramon and with his help, they manage to free Agumon. Taichi hugs Agumon before they return home, where Taichi thanks Daisuke.[67]

Sometime later, during summer, when Taichi is at soccer practice, he and his group of Chosen Children mysteriously vanish into thin air; abducted and trapped in another dimension by Chocomon. They find themselves inside a cold, dark space, as their mind gets clouded. As they slowly regress in age, they feel their captor’s feelings change. They witness little Chocomon searching for Wallace, thinking they might be him. They were released with Chocomon’s defeat.[68]

On August 1st, Taichi and all the original Chosen Children meet with the new generation for their anniversary as Chosen Children. They all sit in the park, sharing stories about their adventures in the Digital World until evening. On August 2nd, Koshiro, Daisuke, and Iori come to Taichi and Hikari’s house. Following Kōshirō’s theory, they manage to open the Digital Gate in the computer in Taichi’s room. Before they manage to go, Taichi’s mother comes back home, seeing all their shoes, therefore they decide not to go. They realize that using the Digital Gate from home may be problematic if they want to keep it a secret. On August 3rd, Odaiba Memorial Day, all 12 children visit the TV station, when suddenly it is struck by lightning. Sensing something, Tailmon rushes in and everyone follows her until they reach a room where they see a shadow on the ceiling. They soon find out it is Wizarmon’s ghost, which shocks them. He tells them they do not yet have enough power to defeat their true enemy, and of a “golden light” that they should use. He disappears soon after, leaving the children to mourn him again.[9]

After hearing Wizarmon’s warning, Taichi and the Chosen Children start to scout the Digital World. After coming back, they manage to locate the Digimon Kaiser’s base, and decide to come up with a plan to take him down. Taichi suggests the new Chosen Children go to the Digital World under the guise of camping, while he, Yamato, and Kōshirō will be their alibi in case their parents call. The next day, after seeing off the children, Taichi and the others head out, with Yamato’s father as a chaperone. Surprisingly, Daisuke’s sister, Jun, appears and asks them to join, but they manage to lose her.[69] From the camp site, Taichi and the others keep in touch with Daisuke's group.[70] In the evening, they analyze Chimeramon’s data sent to them by Hikari. They then exchange emails with Iori concerning a plan to stop the Digimon Kaiser’s base. When the plan succeeds and the children head into the base, Taichi calms Yamato’s concerns, saying all they can do is believe in them.[71] The next day, Jun suddenly arrives, surprising the three of them. When she asks about her brother and his friends’ whereabouts, they try to buy time as Kōshirō says he’ll look for them. While she keeps questioning them, Taichi and Yamato claim they must be in the forest, and to their surprise and relief, they just came back. On their way home, they hear that Ken returned home as the new Chosen Children sleep in the car.[72]

On December 24, 2002, the new Chosen Children gather up the older Chosen Children and give to reunite them with their Digimon partners as Christmas presents. Later, Taichi and Agumon meet Sora, who has second thoughts about giving Yamato a Christmas present. Surprisingly, Taichi encourages her as Agumon remarks that he has grown up. The two then narrowly avoid Jun barreling through on her way to give presets to Yamato. In the evening, the original Chosen Children are the Teenage-Wolves's concert, when ambient noises are suddenly heard from the equipment, and a DarkTyranomon and several Bakemon swarm out behind the band. When Agumon is unable to evolve, they flee outside, where several wild Digimon are already causing havoc. Taichi calls the new Chosen Children to ask for their help. After they arrive and destroy the Dark Tower, the rest of the Digimon evolve, and together they send all the wild Digimon back to the Digital World through Koushirou’s computer. Later, Taichi apologizes to Ken for disturbing his party, before they all head home. That night, all of the Chosen Children cherish their time with their Digimon partners.[10]

In the morning of December 25, news reports reveal that Digimon and Dark Towers have been appearing all over the world, and the Chosen Children go to meet at Koushirou's apartment. When Daisuke informs Taichi he goes to Tamachi in order to help Ken, Taichi objects at first, but then sees his point and allows him to go. At Koushirou's, they learn that Digital Gates had opened up all over the world, but had then closed, therefore they would have to manually reopen the gates with D-3s in order to return all of the Digimon back to the Digital World. Taichi suggests traveling through the Digital World, but the idea proves to be insufficient. When Gennai materializes through Koushirou's computer, he uses Qinglongmon's Digicore to restore the ability to Super Evolve for the older Digimon. They soon see a news report featuring Imperialdramon who evolved from Paildramon with Qinglongmon's light. Gennai then tells them the plan to return all of the wild Digimon before Imperialdramon land at Odaiba Park, and the others rush out to meet them. They all board Imperialdramon, who disperses them all over the world.[73]

After Imperialdramon drops Taichi and Takeru off in Paris[74], the two and their Digimon wait for Michel, Takeru's grandfather, to arrive at the Arc de Triomphe to help them. Michel arrives on a motorbike with a sidecar and gives them a lift. Seeing the Palace of Versailles’s gate open and lights on, he stops and they all go in to investigate. Inside they find Mamemon, BigMamemon, and MetalMamemon partying and drunk, as well as a French Chosen Child, whom Taichi and Takeru find cute, and her partner Floramon held hostage. When Micheal’s bold attempt to rescue the girl fails, Taichi and Takeru ran up to him but are hit by pies too. While Agumon and Patamon evolve and fight the Mamemon brothers outside the palace, Michel, Taichi and Takeru free the girl, who introduces herself as Catherine Deneuve, and explains how she and he partner were ambushed by a Digimon when trying to destroy a Black Tower. When Giromon arrives and joins the fight, Taichi, and the others further evolve their partners. As the four wild Digimon begin to flee, Taichi instructs to chase them to the Dark Tower at the Seine, where they manage to defeat them and destroy the Dark Tower. As other French Chosen Children arrive leading other wild Digimon, Taichi and Takeru kiss Catherine on both cheeks, wishing Merry Christmas in French.[75]

After Imperialdramon picks them up, they arrive on time to help Sora and Miyako, before picking up Hikari and Koushirou from Hong Kong and returning to Odaiba.[76] The Children return at sundown of December 25, and plan to go home and rest. In the evening, Taichi and Hikari talk about the future when the new Chosen Children will have to destroy a Digimon, as Archnemon and Mummymon are still around, wondering if they will be able to do it. On the morning of December 26, Taichi hears a news report about missing children all over Tokyo. When Demon’s soldiers attack in Tokyo, Taichi and Agumon head to Ginza to help fight SkullSatamon. While the children’s Perfect-level Digimon are unmatched, Taichi tells them to not hesitate or they will lose. When even Imperialdramon cannot win, the older Digimon devolve due to staying too long in the Real World, and give him their remaining powers, with which Imperialdramon manages to change mode and kill SkullSatamon, saving a bus full of children. However, soon Demon appears before them, requesting Ken to come with him, but Archenimon and Mummymon manage to kidnap Ken while threatening to hurt the other children they have kidnapped. Since their Digimon are back in the Digital World, Taichi’s group is unable to help, leaving Daisuke’s group to save Ken.[77]

Later, Taichi is at home by his mother’s side when Kido Shuu returns Hikari late at night.[78] On December 28, Agumon calls Taichi to the Digital world, and he sends Hikari an e-mail asking her to come with him. There, they discover the Digital World has become barren, as Agumon and Gabumon tell them that BlackWarGreymon is back. They discover that the Digital World is in a bad state because they were given Qinglongmon’s power. They find a portal to Mount Fuji and realize that BlackWarGreymon is in the Real World. With more power Agumon received from Qinglongmon, he assures Taichi he can fight BlackWarGreymon, and they head to the Real World through the portal. They arrive just in time to stop BlackWarGreymon from killing Oikawa Yukio. When he refuses to listen, Taichi makes Agumon warp evolve and he clashes with BlackWarGreymon. When questioning why they let Oikawa escape, Taichi answers that they need him to save the Dark Seed children. The two Digimon keep clashing until they are out of Taichi’s sight. When WarGreymon, with the help of Imperialdramon, finally manages to exhaust BlackWarGreymon and make him quit, Agumon returns to Taichi.[79]

On December 29, Taichi helps to watch an eye on the Dark Seed children together with Sora and Koushirou. On December 30, WarGreymon is with Taichi in the park when he suddenly senses BlackWarGreymon and leaves to go to him before Taichi.[80] On December 31, with BlackWarGreymon sacrificing himself to seal the Digital Gate in Tokyo, Taichi, Agumon, and Sora watch Kawada Noriko whose Dark Seed energy was absorbed by Oikawa the day before.[81] Later, as the Real World is engulfed with BelialVamdemon’s darkness, Taichi and his group take the Chosen Children’s parents, as well as Noriko and her parents, back to the camp site from which they first got to the Digital World. There, they try to find a way to get to the Digital World, and get Oikawa to help Noriko. Taichi tries to use his Digivice calling for a gate to open, but it doesn’t appear to work. Then Digital Gates from around the world appear to be opening, and an aurora appears as it did before. Taking Noriko with them, the children use their Digivices and head to the Digital World. Taichi and Agumon land in the Digital World by Catherine and Michael’s side and they all use the light of their Digivices to weaken BelialVamdemon, allowing Imperialdramon to vanquish him.[15]
Diablomon Strikes Back[]

In the spring of 2003, when Kuramon begin spreading in great numbers all across the city, the Chosen Children meet at Odaiba Middle School’s computer lab. They learn that a rematerialized Diablomon is responsible for spreading their personal photographs and the emergence of the Kuramon. Taichi and Yamato volunteer to enter the Network and destroy Diablomon again, while the younger children send Kuramon to Kōshirō for safe storage through the Digital Gates. After Taichi, Yamato, Agumon and Gabumon enter the Network, they form Omegamon and enter the space in which Diablomon resides. During the fight, Omegamon is unable to engage or attack Diablomon, as the swarm of Kuramon swarm around it and take its attacks before they can reach him. Only with Hikari and Takeru’s help and Miyako’s distraction opening a massive number of gates, Omegamon is able to kill Diablomon. However, all of the Kuramons escape the space through the gates that Miyako opened, then shut them down, trapping Taichi and the others inside.

After the Kuramon form Armagemon, Taichi and Yamato manage to escape from the Network and emerge in Tokyo Bay, as Omegamon engages Armagemon in a fierce battle. However, Omegamon is overpowered as its arms dislocate from its body and its eyes go dark. Taichi and Yamato watch on in horror when Sora joins them at Tokyo Bay, and as Daisuke and Ken manage to join the fight with Imperialdramon. When Imperialdramon appears to lose as well, Omegamon's remaining power is transferred to him in the form of Omega Blade, with which Imperialdramon defeats Armagemon. As it dissolves back into countless Kuramon, Taichi joins the others and points his Digivice at Imperialdramon's Omega Blade, which unleashes a massive pillar of light that takes in all of the Kuramon, which are imprisoned in Miyako's laptop, and sent for disposal.[11]

In late 2005, as the Real World has become isolated from the Digital World for a year, the Chosen Children have been unable to visit or see their partner Digimon. One morning of June, Taichi oversleeps as Hikari cajoles him out of bed so that he doesn't miss his early morning soccer training. He rides to training, but forgets his lunch, which Hikari brings to him. After training, Taichi goes to attends his class at Tsukishima General High School, he walks on Sora and Yamato speaking in the hallway. While trying to avoid them he is approached by their teacher, Nishijima Daigo, who requests that Taichi see him after school since he hasn’t submitted his career planning form. During lunch Yamato asks Taichi to come to his concert on Sunday, but this clashes with Taichi’s soccer match. Later, Taichi meets with Nishijima and admits that he has no idea what he would like to pursue as a long-term path in life, although he does reflect on how he misses his friends in the Digital World. Taichi tries to recruit his friends to attend his soccer match, but struggles with everyone's conflicting schedules, though Kōshirō reaches out to Mimi in America, and she volunteers to come as long as they pay her airfare.

On Sunday, June 19, as Taichi leaves the house, he sees a new neighbor, Mochidzuki Meiko, moving in nearby. At 2pm, as Taichi's soccer match is about to begin, a Kuwagamon flies over the field. Taichi abandons the match to pursue it and tails it around town on bicycle as it smashes into cars and buildings. Taichi is shocked at the sight of the damage it causes and confused as to why it is appearing now. At the Fuji TV station, it spots Taichi and begins attacking him specifically. He leads it to a vacant lot to get it away from buildings to damage. At the vacant lot, the Kuwagamon swoops on Taichi and knocks him off his bicycle, then crushes it underfoot. Just as the Kuwagamon swoops in for the kill, Taichi's Digivice lights up and Agumon also realizes to protect him. Agumon evolves into Greymon and engages the Kuwagamon in a fight that takes them away from Taichi, around the city through multiple distortions. Taichi receives a call from Hikari, who tips him off that the two have been sighted at Haneda Airport. Taichi almost asks for Hikari's help, but when he remembers the damage that the Kuwagamon caused, he decides against it.

Nishijima arrives in a black van and takes Taichi to Haneda. In the car, Taichi watches the ongoing battle in Haneda and tries to question Nishijima about his identity. Just as they arrives, Kuwagamon overpowers Greymon but when it tries to attack Taichi, Greymon does his best to protect him, though Taichi is still pushed back. At that moment, Yamato, Sora, Kōshirō, Takeru, Hikari, and all of the other partner Digimon arrive as reinforcements, but two more Kuwagamon realize. While Greymon has reverted to Agumon, the other partners evolve and battle the Kuwagamon, protecting Taichi. After two are defeated, the last Kuwagamon prepares a final blast, but a dimensional rift opens up behind it and a hand reaches out into the Real World to snatch the Kuwagamon away. After the battle, the Chosen Children observe both the extensive damage that the battle has caused to Haneda, and the sudden appearance of a large number of government agents on the scene. After Mimi arrives brings souvenirs to everyone, Himekawa drives them home.

The next morning, Taichi and Hikari watch the news reporting on the battle and people’s negative opinions on Digimon, which angers Taichi. At school, Taichi and Yamato try to locate Nishijima, but find that he is absent, when they see that both Mimi and Meiko start going to Tsukishima. Later, Taichi stops Yamato from reacting to the students’ bad mouthing Digimon, angering him further. Taichi and Yamato keep their distance when the eight Chosen Children meet under a nearby bridge to discuss recent events. While Kōshirō analyzes recent events, the other children are critical of the tone of the reporting about the incident, however Taichi is indeed worried about the collateral damage and acknowledges that grain of truth in their reporting. Taichi and Yamato argue over Taichi's hesitation, causing Yamato to storm off, followed by Taichi leaving as well. In the evening, they each return to school to look for Nishijima. When they find him, he reveals he is an agent of the National Data Processing Bureau, and tells them about the distortions and infected Digimon. Later at the shore, Taichi and Agumon talk about the earlier incident with Yamato, as Taichi understands why Yamato is mad, but admits he is now afraid of causing more destruction.

On another day, Taichi and Agumon join the others in their first visit to Kōshirō's new office. Taichi shares everything that he and Yamato learned from Nishijima with the group before Kōshirō explains about the private cyberspace he created for the Digimon. Before leaving, the Chosen Children make plans to get together again on Saturday. On their meeting on Saturday, Kōshirō presents Taichi with a pair of enhanced goggles that he had just finished developing, which visualize the flow of data and distortions. When they set out to examine the area for distortions, they encounter Meiko, who is searching for her "cat". The children let her join them as they look for distortions. After failing to find anything, the group parts ways with Meiko, and decide to use the Daikanransha ferris wheel so that Taichi can cover more ground. As Yamato arrives, the group boards Daikanransha but shut Taichi and Yamato out of the cart in an attempt to force the two to talk. In a separate cart, the two speak of Taichi’s hesitation, but Taichi still expresses his doubts about what they are doing. When Taichi remembers their current goal and puts on his goggles, he observes a massive distortion forming in the sky above a shopping mall in Odaiba.

The children run toward the location as a storm forms, and find that a Digimon named Alphamon materialized. After summoning their Digimon, Taichi and Yamato enter the mall and see that Meiko is attacked by Alphamon. As they move to intervene, Taichi remembers the destruction and halts. After protecting Meiko as the Adult partner Digimon attack, Yamato stresses Taichi the need for Omegamon, but Taichi still hesitates. Yamato insists that even if Taichi does not act, the area will still be destroyed. As Alphamon closes in on Meiko, Taichi musters the courage to take action and calls Agumon into battle and forms Omegamon. Alphamon’s mode changes and engages Omegamon in a duel which almost knocks Taichi off his feet. When Omegamon charges its Garuru Cannon at point-blank range, Taichi’s anxiety is triggered at the thought of the possible destruction, but overcomes it. However, Alphamon retreats into a distortion, causing the blast to hurt Omegamon who reverts into Koromon and Tsunomon. After the battle Meiko introduces Meicoomon to the Chosen Children, and they welcome her into the group as another Chosen Child. Yamato asks Taichi if he has found his resolve, but as Taichi does not answer, he tells him that he is glad that he did not run away this time.[12]

As summer approaches, Taichi watches the Odaiba repairs in the morning from his apartment’s balcony, when Hikari tells him to eat his breakfeast. When Mimi rings the bell, Taichi hurriedly eats his breakfast, as the Chosen Children plan to go to a hot spring. When they get to the others in their usual meeting place, Taichi and Yamato still seem to be at odds, but say nothing, and the children head to the Ooedo-Onsen Monogatari with their Digimon. There Taichi changes into a robe and meets Nishijima, surprised to see him. When the go outside to meet everyone by the foot baths, they meet Himekawa Maki. Later when they eat Taichi and the others talk to Nishijima who tells them about the Bureau. Later, the boys try to get more information from their teacher as they bathe. When Taichi enters the steam room he find Yamato there and they both sit quietly. When they come out, they find that the girls entered the men’s baths to look for their lost Digimon, and Taichi yells at them to get out, embarrassed. Later the children leave the hot springs and take a bus back home, while they tease Taichi and Yamato who seem to be fighting.

Two days later in school, Taichi, Sora and Koushirou visit Nishijima in his office to learn about a distortion that appeared two nights ago. Nishijima assures them that they are still needed and tells them to be careful. Later, When Taichi receives an email from Koushirou about a new distortion in Shiokaze Park, Taichi hurries on his bicycle. When he uses his goggles to see the distortion, Yamato passes by him, and Taichi joins him on his scooter. When they arrive, they meet up with the others and try to find a way past the security, while Mimi and Meiko were fighting the infected Orgemon there. After Orgemon was taken back to the Digital World, the Chosen Children regroup and discuss the battle’s results, causing Koushirou and Mimi to argue. When Yamato expresses his anger with Jo who didn’t join them, Taichi argues that Jo must have a good reason he couldn’t come. In the evening, Taichi brings Leomon to Koushirou’s office to meet with the others. Leomon tells them about the mutations occurring in the Digital World, which causes infected Digimon to appear. The next evening, while Taichi cleans his soccer shoes, Hikari suggests that he should talk to Jo, but Taichi answers that Jo doesn’t want to deal with certain things. When she asks him if he has similar feelings, he refuses to answer.

Two days later, during the school festival, Taichi walks by a costume contest and is shocked to see their Digimon participating. After texting the others, he finds Yamato in the hallway to ask him to take care of it since he has soccer practice. Yamato agrees but again confronts him again about his doubts, to which Taichi refuses to answer and runs off. After a successful match, Taichi gets a message from Koushirou about a new distortion while changing, and heads to the location at the school. When Taichi arrives with the others, Palmon, Gomamon and Leomon are already within the distortion chasing Meicoomon who was kidnapped by who appears as the Digimon Kaizer. When Imperialdramon appears as well, the other Digimon try to get in the distortion, but fail before the distortion closes. They manage to watch the battle through Koushirou’s laptop, and see Leomon becoming infected. As Jo returns with a new resolve, the children watch Mimi and Jo’s partners reach Ultimate level and defeat Imperialdramon. After the Digimon Kaizer releases Meicoomon, Leomon retrieves them all. However, to their horror, Meicoomon suddenly kills Leomon before leaving through a distortion, leaving the children in shock.[13]

After the festival ends, Taichi, joins the others at Kōshirō's office, as they try to find the source for Meicoomon’s infection, while keeping their Digimon safe in Kōshirō's cyberspace. However, even with Meiko’s help, they cannot find any leads, making Kōshirō insensitive. When they leave, Taichi and Yamato discuss Mimi and Jo's new Ultimate Evolution, and Yamato comments that if the rest of the group attain Ultimate Evolution, they will not have to be relied upon, making it easier for Taichi. On the day Meiko returns to school, Taichi and the others greet her, as Taichi tries to apologize on Kōshirō's behalf. When they meet after school, they discover that Takeru took Patamon home, and agree to only take them out on afternoons after school. The next morning, Taichi and Hikari watch the news report on glitches occurring across the Kanto prefecture, as a message appears on screens about an upcoming catastrophe. Taichi comments at how their mother is unfazed to hear the news report and asks the children to pick up groceries after school.

Later that day, while Taichi reads manga, Agumon nags him to play and spend time with him. As Taichi notices that he is acting weird, Agumon confesses and tells Taichi about the upcoming Reboot designed to stop the infected Digimon. A moment later, Taichi notices a distortion at Tokyo Big Sight, and they head to the location, where they find Meicoomon. As the Chosen Children arrive on the scene, their Digimon attempt to subdue Meicoomon and push her back into the distortion to prevent area damage, but she evolves to Perfect form. As Meiko also rushes to the scene, The Digimon manage to push her into the distortion, but struggle to keep her inside. As some of the partner Digimon begin to be overtaken by the infection, the Reboot begins to countdown, while Kōshirō arrives to explain the situation and set up a backup field that will back up their Digimon's data. With Tentomon evolving to Ultimate form, he tries to get all the Digimon into the backup field, but fails as the reboot is completed, and the children watch in dismay.

Sometime later, as normalcy has returned to Tokyo, the Chosen Children are still depressed by the loss of their Digimon as they attempt to return to their daily lives. Taichi tries to move on; meeting with Yamato and going to soccer practice. When he is approached by Kōshirō, who proposes an expedition into the Digital World, Taichi declines. On a rainy day Taichi is practicing soccer by himself while he reflects on his conversation Kōshirō, when he suddenly hears a whistle and begins running towards the school, with Hikari chasing after him. When they get there, all eight Chosen Children gather and they begin making plans to travel into the Digital World. With Nishijima and Himekawa’s help, the children gather at Big Sight and manage to open a Digital Gate, through which they enter the Digital World. When they arrive, they get caught in the crossfire of a fight between Alphamon and JESmon in the sky above them. After they manage to escape, they hear a whistle and follow its sound to find their Digimon in their Baby II forms, with Tokomon and Nyaromon arguing over Hikari’s old whistle. The Chosen Children approach the Digimon, who respond with curiosity.[82]
Loss[]

As the Digimon start asking many questions, Taichi approaches Koromon, saying he hasn’t changed. Later, the children discuss their next steps for getting home. When they hear a sudden sound in the bushes, Taichi approaches and they find Meicoomon still in her Adult form. After crying out for Meiko, Meicoomon rushes off and Taichi begins to run after her, but stops when he sees Meicoomon passing through a distortion. After he returns, they all settle to eat, as they reflect on the Digimon’s lost memories. When Taichi ponders if they will be able to save Meicoomon, Yamato comments that they must since they are comrades. When Koromon approaches Taichi with a mouthful of spaghetti, enjoying the food, Taichi tells him all sorts of foods that he likes and then throws him up into the air, as the other Digimon start to want to play that game as well. After the Digimon fall asleep, the children are unable to contact the Real World nor Gennai, and Taichi decides to look for Meicoomon so that Meiko can reunite with her Digimon. When the children decide to head out, Taichi goes to wake the Digimon, but they find that they have all evolves to their Child forms while they slept.

Later, Taichi goes to look for distortions using his goggles while the group makes camp within the forest. When he returns he says distortions pop up from time to time and Koushirou concludes that they will have to follow the distortions in order to find Meicoomon. When everyone is later asleep at night, Taichi and Yamato join Sora by the river, as she has been feeling down. When she doesn’t want to share her feelings, Taichi tries to restart the conversation by commenting on the food, but it doesn’t seem to work. Suddenly they see Agumon asleep on a log that has been floating down the river. Taichi immediately goes to get him out of the water and wakes him up. As Sora gets up and leaves, Taichi tells Agumon to head back without him, and goes after her together with Yamato. When Sora stops Taichi and Yamato start arguing about what they should do in this situation. Sora gets angry that they don’t understand the situation, and runs off as they chase her. When she says no one ever understands her, Taichi says that he could never understand her because she always solves her problems on her own and she starts to cry as he reminded her of Piyomon.

Suddenly, Meicoomon comes out of the bushes and Mugendramon appears and attacks them. After they manage to dodge the attack they go searching for Meicoomon. They find her with the others, who are relieved to see them. When Mugendramon is about to attack them again, Taichi tells Agumon to evolve, however it seems that the Digimon cannot. Mugendramon attacks and the children are blasted off to different parts of the Digital World through distortions. Taichi and Gabumon are in a forest trying to find the others, when Plotmon jumps out of a bush and takes Taichi to Hikari who was unconscious. When she wakes, they speak of what happened before they start looking for the others. They get to a canyon with screens on the wall, where Taichi reflects on the fact that he couldn’t make Agumon evolve, but Hikari answers that they should accept the way their Digimon are now and move forward. When a new distortion opens above them, they see Sora is in trouble through it. They get to her location in time to save her, and reunite with the others. Facing Mugendramon and a man who resembles Gennai, they run away as he claims that humans and Digimon should live separately.

Thanks to Plotmon’s distraction, the group escapes and gets onto a ship by an iceberg, where Meiko apologizes to them. Soon they are attacked again, but this time they resolve to fight. While Taichi, Yamato and Hikari act as a decoy, they are attacked by MetalSeadramon and are thrown into the water. As he comes for another attack, Gabumon manages to slightly hurt him, but he comes back and takes Taichi and Yamato underwater. After they manage to get free they try to swim up to the surface but lose breath. As they sink to the bottom, Taichi hears Agumon and with their last strength they reach out to their partners who dive sown to save them. With a renewed resolve, Taichi and Yamato manage to evolve Agumon and Gabumon to their Ultimate forms and attack MetalSeadramon before Hikari gets hurt. As MetalSeadramon attacks again, Taichi and Yamato watch as their Digimon defeat him, and then devolve to their Baby II form. When they return to the others they discover that they have defeated Mugendramon. As the others return to Meiko’s location, Taichi and Yamato apologize to Sora, when suddenly the ground shakes.[83]
Coexistence[]

Taichi gets to Meiko just in time to push her out of the Perfect-level Meicoomon’s attack. After Meicoomon flees into the real world, the group notices masses of unfriendly Digimon heading to the Real World. While trying to find a way back to the Real World to stop Meicoomon, the terrain starts shifting under the children’s feet, and are then attacked by Dokugomon and Drimogemon. The children escape while their Digimon fight, but vines emerge from the ground to trap them. Their Digimon manage to release them before the ground vanishes again, confusing the children. As the sky suddenly turns dark, the Chosen Children make camp in a cave. When Meiko starts feeling guilty about Meicoomon, Taichi and the other try to cheer her up, promising to help save Meicoomon. During a sudden rainfall, the children hypothesize that the current Digital World treats them as a virus because they are the Chosen Children. With the sun shining once more, they come out of the cave and find themselves in the Tropical Jungle from their first encounter with their Digimon, when suddenly they fall through a distortion in the ground.

When they awaken, they are back in Tokyo where a crowd of nearby people react negatively to the sight of their Digimon. When the police spot them, Taichi tells everyone to run until they are cornered in a parking lot. The children hide the Digimon in the private before they are apprehended by police. The children are taken in for questioning, accused of harboring Digimon who pose to the real world, but they are bailed out by Nishijima. As Nishijima drives the children, he tells them that their homes are being surrounded by the media as their identities were leaked, so he takes them to the high school since it is empty for the summer break. There they learn about the damage caused by Meicoomon in their absence and of the other Digimon invading their world, but Taichi claims that they cannot fight them randomly. When they learn of Homeostasis’s plan on removing Meicoomon, Taichi and the others reassure Meiko that they will help her. They eventually realizes that Yggdrasill intends to use Meicoomon as a "switch" to trigger the Digimon stationed around the world to start attacking.

When the Digimon start getting hungry, the children decide to have dinner. After they eat, the children tell each other scary stories by torchlight to cheer up. However, Nishijima returns in the middle of Meiko's scary story and scares everyone in the room. Since their homes are still surrounded by the press, they choose to remain at school and call home to tell their parents where they are. When Taichi speaks with his mother he notes how she is showing more concern to their Digimon than her children. Later, Taichi overhears Meiko ruminating to herself about Meicoomon and tries to cheer her up. When she starts to doubt her bond with her Digimon, Taichi snaps at her, but quickly apologizes. As he walks away, he tells her that her way of thinking is wrong. Agumon then finds Taichi on the school’s rooftop, where he shares his thoughts about how he no longer has the same confidence and decisiveness that he had as a child. Agumon advises Taichi that he should simply act on his instincts.

The next morning, when Meicoomon appears in Tokyo, the Chosen Children and Nishijima confront her. With Meiko’s unsuccessful pleadings, the eight partner Digimon super evolve and try to stop her. As Meicoomon grows stronger with fear, JESmon appears in order to kill her, and she evolves to Ultimate form, dissolving the area around her as she fights JESmon. When the children realize that Homeostasis was the one who removed them from the Digital World, Taichi begins to question who their real enemy is. As the Digimon protect their partners from falling debris, they notice Meicoomon protecting Meiko from a falling JESmon, making them believe they can still save her and further evolve their Digimon. While they try to lure Meicoomon away to the ocean, Homeostasis possesses Hikari and tells the Chosen Children to stop, threatening their lives. However, the children remain determined to save Meicoomon before Hikari forces Homeostasis out of her body. When JESmon grabs Raguelmon and opens a distortion into the Digital World, Taichi and Yamato form Omegamon, who reopens the distortion long enough for everyone to follow.

There, Alphamon appears and joins the battle in order to capture Meicoomn, but all of the partner Digimon except Omegamon are caught in the crossfire between JESmon and Alphamon and revert to Baby II level. As the four Digimon continue fighting, Meiko asks the Chosen Children to kill Meicoomon. Her decision shocks the rest of the Chosen Children, but Taichi agrees to do it to prevent Yggdrasill and Homeostasis from having their way. During Omegamon and Meicoomon’s battle, Meiko runs out to her partner with Yamato, Taichi and Nishijima following her. When JESmon attempts to attack Meicoomon, he is tackled by Alphamon and the blast shatters the ground around the three children. Taichi pushes Yamato and Meiko away from a rift that opens in the ground, thus saving them but also separating himself from them. As the three flee the collapsing ground, Taichi signals to Omegamon to save Yamato and Meiko. However, the ground completely collapses under Taichi, leaving him to fall into the chasm when Nishijima tries to reach in and save Taichi but instead falls in with him.[84]
Future[]

When Taichi wakes up in a dark place, he checks to see the state of his body, and relaxes when he realizes he is uninjured. When he hears Nishijima’s voice, he uses the light of his phone to find him and sees that he is gravely injured. They realize they are in a lab in the Digital World and discover Daisuke, Miyako, Iori, Ken, and Gennai are inside pods in suspended animation. Nishijima tells Taichi that they had gone missing after discovering Yggdrasil's plan and that Himekawa apparently worked with Yggdrasil to revive her digimon partner. When the mysterious man arrives and shuts the life support in the pods, he tells them that they can be saved only by sending them to the Real World, but the moment they do, the lab will self-destruct. Since there is only one empty pod remaining, Taichi tries to find a way to save them all. As Nishijima is already heavily wounded, he tricks Taichi into entering the final pod and initiates the transfer sequence. Although Taichi protests, his teacher gives him some final advice about striving toward the future. After the transfer finishes, Taichi is sent back to the real world with the others in the pods and the lab explodes.

Taichi’s pod emerges by the beach in the Real World, where Meicoomon has evolves to Ordenimon and wreaked havoc in Tokyo. and he arrives just in time to push Agumon and Meiko out of Ordenimon’s attack. Agumon hugs Taichi, and everyone are shocked to see that Taichi is alive. After Yamato returns him his goggles, Agumon evolves and they form Omegamon, who joins the other Digimon in battle. When Hikari begs her brother to not kill Meicoomon, Taichi tells her to keep beliving in the light and hate him for destroying Meicoomon if she wishes. With Hikari and Holydramon now joining the fight, the Digimon manage to push back Ordenimon. Then Meiko’s Digivice begins to glow in correspondence to the Ultimate Digimon’s powers, which are transferred to Omegamon who changes mode. Taichi and Yamato watch as their Digimon battles Ordenimon and destroys her. With Meicoomon gone, the skies clear and the children watch as the sun rises. The Digimon return to their partners in Baby II forms, and Koromon tells Taichi he is hungry.

During the next three months, Taichi decides to go to prep school after changing his career path with Nishijima’s words in his mind. With Meiko back in Tottori and Christmas approaching, the eight Chosen Children and their partner Digimon meet. In the evening they are at Aqua City, where Taichi calls Meiko on his cell phone with the others present. When Meiko answers, a flustered Taichi asks her if she received their package. She tells him that she got it today and is happy with everyone’s Christmas gifts. Taichi struggles to form his words with his friends looking at him expectantly, however Agumon jumps in and tells her they will always be friends, as snow begins to fall down.[85]

On February 28, 2012, Taichi is seen on television with Kōshirō, advising the government on the digitama that appeared above Tokyo Tower seven days earlier.[86]
Epilogue[]
By 2027, Taichi and Agumon have reunited. Taichi now works as an ambassador for the Real and Digital Worlds together with Agumon. On one of these days Taichi and Agumon are planning to meet with Centaurmon and the Prime Minister discussing issues in the Digital World. When Agumon reminds him about food, Taichi promises they will eat after they get back.[87] On another day, Taichi takes his son to a meeting with all the other Chosen Children and their Digimon in the Digital World.[15]

- Yagami (八神) is a Japanese family name that means "eight gods". Taichi (太一) is a Japanese male given name that means "magnificent one".
- Taichi's name starts with the Kanji for "large" or "great" (大/太), just like Daisuke and Daigo's names.
